{"id":180040,"date":"2025-09-30T12:31:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-30T12:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/180040\/"},"modified":"2025-09-30T12:31:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T12:31:12","slug":"mandai-rainforest-resort-by-wow-architects-creeps-through-the-jungle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/180040\/","title":{"rendered":"Mandai Rainforest Resort by WOW Architects &#8220;creeps through the jungle&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Treehouses resembling seed pods, bark-imprinted walls and a spine-like spiral staircase pay homage to the landscape surrounding Mandai Rainforest Resort in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/singapore\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Singapore<\/a>, completed by local studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/wow-architects\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WOW Architects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Overlooking a reservoir in the 126-hectare Mandai Wildlife Reserve, the resort was created for hospitality brand Banyan Tree and is designed to immerse visitors in the surrounding nature.<\/p>\n<p>It was completed by <a href=\"https:\/\/wow.sg\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WOW Architects<\/a> as part of a larger wildlife and nature destination funded by the Singapore government, which also includes the wildlife parks Singapore Zoo, Night Safari and Bird Paradise.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252819 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mandai-rainforest-resort-wow-architects_dezeen_2364_col_9-852x559.jpg\" alt=\"Treehouse pods at Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1551\"  \/>WOW Architects has completed a rainforest resort in Singapore<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This development, the Mandai Rainforest Resort, is part of a $3.5 billion SGD (\u00a320 billion) investment to build all the [local] natural attractions,&#8221; studio co-founder Wong Chiu Man told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the key issues was that the non-profit organisation Nature Society was against development in this area because it was the last remaining patch of green forest in Singapore and there was a lot of biodiversity around this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To address these concerns and minimise the project&#8217;s impact on the forest and its biodiversity, WOW Architects designed the hotel in line with national sustainability benchmarks and organised the building to be eventually &#8220;reabsorbed within the jungle&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252829 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mandai-rainforest-resort-wow-architects_dezeen_2364_col_16-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Outdoor area at eco-hotel by WOW Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>The structure &#8220;creeps through the jungle&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This strategy involved minimising the felling of old trees, preserving existing habitats, integrating a rainwater collection system and passive cooling techniques, as well as cloaking the structure in greenery.<\/p>\n<p>According to the studio, the hotel is the first in Singapore to achieve the country&#8217;s Green Mark Super Low Energy certification, which is awarded by the Building and Construction Authority to buildings that achieve at least a 60 per cent energy saving compared to the 2005 building code.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252821 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mandai-rainforest-resort-wow-architects_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Lobby interior at Singapore hotel\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>Organic forms feature throughout the hotel&#8217;s interior<\/p>\n<p>Greenery-covered forms make up the hotel&#8217;s curving six-storey structure, which was designed to wind around the site&#8217;s largest trees in a way that mimics a vine. Meanwhile, 24 treehouse pods contain rooms elevated within the forest&#8217;s canopy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The shape of the building has no defined shape, because it&#8217;s like a vine \u2013 it creeps through the jungle,&#8221; Chiu Man explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The building mass [and] the plan do not really have a usual architectural logic to it,&#8221; he added. &#8220;It&#8217;s simply opportunistic and responsive to the situation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252825 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mandai-rainforest-resort-wow-architects_dezeen_2364_col_12-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Dining space at Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree by WOW Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>A restaurant and dining hall are held at the basement level<\/p>\n<p>Concrete used for the structure&#8217;s exterior was chosen in response to Singapore&#8217;s humid climate, says Chiu Man, and has been imprinted with the bark of felled trees as a &#8220;living memory of the forest&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Steps at the hotel&#8217;s front lead up to an open-air lobby, where a panelled ceiling is raised on a series of large round columns. Organic forms feature throughout the interior, with wooden furniture nodding to the jungle.<\/p>\n<p>From the lobby, a spiral staircase resembling the &#8220;spinal column of a living creature&#8221; leads to the hotel&#8217;s upper floors alongside two elevator shafts and a winding external ramp.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/13\/suyian-lodge-safari-resort\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/suyian-lodge-michaelis-boyd-safari-resort-north-kenya-architecture_dezeen_2364_sq-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Suyian Lodge safari resort by Michaelis Boyd, Nicholas Plewman Architects and Fox Browne Creative\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Suyian Lodge safari resort in Kenya &#8220;feels deeply integrated&#8221; with site\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Corridors lined with openings for ventilation lead to the hotel&#8217;s private rooms, which are spread across three floors and range from 36-square-metre double rooms to 44-square-metre family rooms.<\/p>\n<p>Each room was designed by WOW Architects to have views out towards the surrounding landscape, with glazing across the hotel&#8217;s north-facing facade overlooking the reservoir.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, situated at the hotel&#8217;s east and west wings are the series of treehouse pods linked to the main volume by a network of raised walkways.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252812 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mandai-rainforest-resort-wow-architects_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Interior view of treehouse pods designed by WOW Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>Treehouse pods are elevated within the forest&#8217;s canopy<\/p>\n<p>Raised on columns, the tiled treehouses provide a series of luxury rooms for guests, modelled on a seed pod of a local plant.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, the predominantly wooden pods are arranged around a main ensuite bedroom, which leads out to a sheltered terrace via sliding doors.<\/p>\n<p>Complementing the treehouses are private &#8220;pool pods&#8221; held within nest-like structures that are oriented at each wing to face sunset and sunrise, as well as Wellness Pods \u2013 spikey, wood-clad volumes where spa treatments take place.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252810 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mandai-rainforest-resort-wow-architects_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x1280.jpg\" alt=\"Wellness Pod at Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree\" width=\"1573\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Spiky Wellness Pods contain private spas<\/p>\n<p>A light-filled restaurant and dining area are contained at the basement level, where a gym, spa, meeting rooms and events spaces are also held.
