Last week, astronomers described <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/astronomers-discover-potential-dwarf-planet-lurking-way-beyond-pluto-2000630151\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ammonite<\/a>, a potential dwarf planet beyond Pluto. Yesterday, astronomers announced the existence of <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/astronomers-spot-companion-star-in-orbit-around-iconic-star-betelgeuse-confirming-suspicions-2000632305\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BetelBuddy<\/a>, a small companion star orbiting Betelgeuse. And now we have another exciting discovery to share.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/PSJ\/addd22\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Planetary Science Journal<\/a> paper published earlier this month, astronomers with the Large inclination Distant Objects (LiDO) survey reported the discovery of 2020 VN40, a rare distant object that orbits the Sun once for every ten orbits Neptune completes. Astronomers have classified 2020 VN40 as a <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/asset\/hubble\/trans-neptunian-object\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trans-Neptunian object<\/a>\u2014a class of small objects and dwarf planets that orbit the Sun at a greater distance than Neptune. The small object sports a peculiar, tilted orbit that places it in <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/enigmatic-star-system-has-5-planets-locked-in-perfect-h-1846124935\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">orbital resonance<\/a> with Neptune at a ratio of 10:1. This means the two celestial bodies affect each other\u2019s motion, locking them into a clean, neat ratio of orbital periods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a big step in understanding the outer solar system,\u201d Rosemary Pike, lead researcher from the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard &amp; Smithsonian, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfa.harvard.edu\/news\/astronomers-discover-rare-distant-object-sync-neptune\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a>. \u201cIt shows that even very distant regions influenced by Neptune can contain objects, and it gives us new clues about how the solar system evolved.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Spotting an oddball object in the solar system is always a cause for celebration, but 2020 VN40 stands out for a couple of reasons. First, it supports the idea that Neptune\u2019s gravity can pull distant objects into the inner solar system\u2014something astronomers have documented with other distant objects.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2000632721\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2020-vn40-neptune.jpeg\" alt=\"2020 Vn40 Neptune\" width=\"777\" height=\"778\"  \/>An image showing the orbits of all celestial objects discovered by the Outer Solar System Origins Survey. Credit: Rosemary Pike, CfA <\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, 2020 VN40 features a strange, tilted orbit that brings it closer to the Sun when it\u2019s nearest to Neptune\u2014the opposite of how most similar objects behave. This tilt is what\u2019s causing the observed orbital sync between Neptune and 2020 VN40, in which the smaller object approaches the Sun once for every ten orbits Neptune completes, according to the study authors. This means that, for 2020 VN, one year is equal to 1,650 Earth years!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new motion is like finding a hidden rhythm in a song we thought we knew,\u201d said study co-author Ruth Murray-Clay, an astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz. \u201cIt could change how we think about the way distant objects move.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is just the beginning,\u201d said Kathryn Volk of the Planetary Science Institute. \u201cWe\u2019re opening a new window into the solar system\u2019s past.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"For lovers of newly identified space objects, July has indeed been an exciting month.
