{"id":182872,"date":"2025-10-01T15:51:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T15:51:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/182872\/"},"modified":"2025-10-01T15:51:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T15:51:15","slug":"after-cuts-to-research-funding-trump-pledges-millions-for-pediatric-cancer-initiative-involving-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/182872\/","title":{"rendered":"After cuts to research funding, Trump pledges millions for pediatric cancer initiative involving AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg723okk001y27p0dufg1la7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday that the White House says will use artificial intelligence to transform the way scientists fight childhood cancer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72hvzh00003b6qtf6q2uhu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, the move comes amid cuts to hundreds of millions of dollars in science research grants and proposed cuts to the budget of the nation\u2019s primary agency for cancer research and training \u2013 moves that experts say could mean dramatic losses in cancer treatments.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg7256690005336nhx9x1ref@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re going to defeat childhood cancer once and for all,\u201d Trump said Tuesday in the Oval Office, accompanied by children who have had cancer. \u201cI\u2019m thrilled to sign a very historic executive order to massively accelerate pediatric cancer research and harness the extraordinary potential of artificial intelligence to fight this terrible disease.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg74f62a0000336n3rgah9i1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During the announcement, Trump turned to the children standing to the left of his desk and told them, \u201cYou\u2019re all going to be better very soon.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72566a0008336npg756lg9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Cancer rates among children in the US have been increasing since the 1970s, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11698462\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">studies show.<\/a> The cancer mortality rate for children has fallen more than 50% since 1975, but it is still the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/types\/childhood-cancers\/child-adolescent-cancers-fact-sheet#:~:text=The%20cancer%20mortality%20rate%E2%80%94the,further%20reduce%20childhood%20cancer%20mortality.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">leading cause<\/a> of disease-related death in kids. Pediatric cancer research has been historically underfunded, the Children\u2019s Cancer Foundation says, making up less than 10% of the federal cancer research budget.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72566a0009336nblv5pl9x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The new executive order doubles the US National Institutes of Health\u2019s investment in a <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11658014\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">childhood cancer data initiative<\/a>, launched during Trump\u2019s first term, with an additional $50 million.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg7472rm00093b6qe9mywop6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The initiative gathers data from every child, adolescent and young adult diagnosed with cancer in the US, regardless of where in the nation they receive care, in an effort to help scientists better understand the nature of childhood cancers. Part of the new investment will go toward grants for scientists working on projects that apply AI to childhood cancer research.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72566a000a336nmak7ymeb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The White House said the executive order guarantees that AI will be integrated into US Department of Health and Human Services systems for sharing health information among health care systems, organizations and patients.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72566a000b336nayjfhuel@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The executive order also directs the Make America Healthy Again Commission within HHS to work with the White House\u2019s Office of Science and Technology Policy to harness AI to improve childhood cancer clinical trials, sharpen diagnoses and fine-tune treatments so they won\u2019t have to be so hard on a child\u2019s body.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72566a000c336ng8whugl3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe treatments these little kids undergo involve therapies like chemo and radiation that put them through hell,\u201d NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya said earlier Tuesday. \u201cEven though 85% will be cured, the therapies themselves can cause health problems if these kids age into adulthood. Nearly 60% of childhood cancer survivors experience severe life-threatening complications in adulthood.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72566a000d336n1bucytz4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bhattacharya noted that the United States\u2019 investment in research has vastly improved outcomes for children with cancer. But the Trump administration has also cut hundreds of scientists from the federal payroll and canceled several hundreds of millions of dollars in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/13\/health\/trump-administration-nih-funding-sanders-report\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">science grants,<\/a> including those that fund pediatric cancer research.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72566a000e336n96urmhpq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those cuts have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/17\/politics\/pediatric-brain-cancer-funding-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">left some families<\/a> who had been hoping to join trials of new treatments scrambling to find other options. For example, the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium \u2013 a national network of doctors, scientists and hospitals that provide children access to experimental treatments through clinical trials, which has been conducting pediatric cancer research for 25 years \u2013 learned in August that it would no longer have federal funding.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72566a000f336n2umrc31l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although budget negotiations are still underway, the Trump administration initially proposed cutting research initiatives at the National Cancer Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fightcancer.org\/releases\/future-cancer-cures-jeopardy-president-proposes-massive-cuts-national-cancer-institute#:~:text=Cuts%20could%20cost%20United%20States,rising%20incidence%20of%20cancer%20nationwide.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">by more than 37%<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72566a000g336ngq48glrp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mark Fleury, policy principal on emerging science and advocacy at the American Cancer Society, said his organization has consistently advocated for additional federal funding to advance the fight against cancer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72566a000h336n6p89smbr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNational Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute, they really fund important research that wouldn\u2019t get funded otherwise. Oftentimes, this is basic research that is too far removed from a product that industry isn\u2019t going to fund, but nonetheless industry sort of benefits from the research funding,\u201d Fleury said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72566a000i336nax7b3rwp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even a 10% cut in NIH funding would result in 30 fewer drugs developed within 30 years and an average of two fewer per year after that, he said, citing the Congressional Budget Office. \u201cAnd that\u2019s just the 10% cut,\u201d Fleury said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72566a000j336nf11invig@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s unclear how the new AI initiative will change research going forward, but the families at Tuesday\u2019s signing expressed their eagerness. Joshua Armstrong, whose daughter Laurel was diagnosed with leukemia at age 2, told Trump on Tuesday that he\u2019s often wondered why there aren\u2019t better treatments available for kids with cancer.
