The nonprofit promotes mental health and illness prevention through education, research and advocacy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72tgbf00053b6n381bgblx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The 17 factors mainly concern adults and youth who experienced mental illness, suicidal thoughts or substance use disorder in the past year; adults and youth who didn\u2019t receive necessary treatment, couldn\u2019t afford it or were uninsured; people with insurance that didn\u2019t cover mental or emotional problems; and the availability of mental health providers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72p6k800003b6n4khkvlr9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nevada had the worst rating, followed by Arizona and Alabama \u2014 marking the second time Nevada and Arizona have ranked the lowest, \u201cunderscoring a high need for strategic investment in mental health in these states,\u201d MHA said in a news release.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/smha-report-overall-rank-images-table-01.jpg\" alt=\"The report ranks each US state and Washington, DC, on mental well-being and mental health care.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1950\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72uydw000d3b6np751h5d8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe must also remember \u2014 and we really take this to heart at Mental Health America \u2014 that behind every data point here is a real person who deserves access to timely, quality, affordable mental health care,\u201d Mary Giliberti, interim president and CEO of MHA, said in a Monday news briefing. \u201cThese are not just statistics. They are stories. And through sharing the data, we hope not only to raise awareness of these mental health topics and needs, but to turn that awareness into action.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72uydw000e3b6nwwybx2ua@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe message from this year\u2019s report is clear: We continue to face a persistent mental health crisis in this country,\u201d Giliberti said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72uydw000f3b6nh7wauxzx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            About 23% of adults in the United States experienced mental health challenges in 2024, according to the report. In 2022 and 2023, 25% of adults with mental illness reported an unmet need for mental health treatment, about 77% of adults with substance use disorder didn\u2019t receive help and around 9% of adults with mental illness were uninsured.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72uydw000g3b6ng33nq45n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And there aren\u2019t enough mental health professionals to serve the need. For every provider in the United States, there are 320 people, said Maddy Reinert, lead author of the report and senior director of population health at MHA, speaking in the news briefing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72uydw000h3b6nr7ee0mmx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The rates of depressive episodes and suicidal thoughts among kids ages 12 to 17 have improved, but nearly 3 million youth still said they had serious suicidal thoughts in 2024, the report found. Additionally, about 28% of youth didn\u2019t have a preventive health care appointment in 2022 or 2023, representing a missed opportunity for screening and prevention.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72ux6u000b3b6niu74uda0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe data continue to show that the overall need for mental health care remains high, while access still falls short for too many,\u201d Reinert said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72vz0t000m3b6ns7r6f35c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The report also discovered regional disparities, with people in the South or states with greater rural populations still facing inadequate access to care. Roughly 20% of adults in Tennessee, Mississippi and Texas were uninsured, compared with 4% in Vermont and Maryland. And around 40% of adults in Wisconsin, Utah and Wyoming reported not receiving the care they needed, compared with 13% in Maine and 16% in Arkansas.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72vz0t000n3b6nybh3rlbw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The organization collected its  data from several sources, including the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72vz0t000o3b6nqgeclz2i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s unacceptable that access to mental health care is still a problem, more than 15 years after the passage of the (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/marketplace\/private-health-insurance\/mental-health-parity-addiction-equity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act<\/a>),\u201d Dr. Marketa M. Wills, CEO and medical director of the American Psychiatric Association, said via email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72vz0t000p3b6nlvhbnx00@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAcross states there should not be \u2018haves\u2019 and \u2018have nots\u2019 in terms of who gets to receive the care they need,\u201d Wills, who wasn\u2019t involved in the report, added. \u201cWe call upon policymakers at the state and federal levels to use the solutions that we know work, like telehealth and integrated care, to expand access and connect more people who need it with lifesaving treatments.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72vz0t000q3b6n4e7178ve@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over the years, a barrier to \u201cimproving mental health has been skepticism that policy changes would even help,\u201d Giliberti said. This report challenges that mindset.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72vo00000k3b6nz24h0uv9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2018, \u201cMaine and Virginia ranked 39th and 40th for adults with any mental illness who were uninsured,\u201d Giliberti explained. \u201cBut after both states expanded Medicaid in 2019, their rankings have improved dramatically. In this report \u2026 Maine has climbed to 10th place. Virginia is now in 23rd, and it\u2019s not a coincidence. It is a success story for mental health policy.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72wlr600123b6nm400qrm8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That news comes as President Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/03\/business\/trump-big-beautiful-bill-business-economy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cOne Big Beautiful Bill Act\u201d<\/a>    for domestic policy, which he signed into law in July, may cut federal Medicaid spending by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/28\/politics\/republican-plans-to-overhaul-medicaid-already-shaking-up-2026-midterms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">roughly $800 billion<\/a> over 10 years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72wlr600133b6nthqoh3bb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Regarding  New York coming out on top, \u201csince taking office, Governor Kathy Hochul has made mental health a top priority of her administration and has followed through with an unprecedented level of investment, securing nearly $2 billion to strengthen New York\u2019s continuum of care,\u201d a spokesperson for the governor said via email. \u201cFrom adding inpatient capacity to dramatically expanding outpatient programs to creating thousands of new units of specialized housing and more, the state has taken bold measures to ensure all New Yorkers have access to these critical services.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72wlr600143b6netvw8c42@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The spokesperson also noted Hochul\u2019s efforts to improve youth mental health, including \u201clegislative initiatives to address the harmful impacts of social media and to eliminate the use of smartphones by students in K-12 public schools.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72wlr600153b6niu44ee2b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The positive ratings for Hawaii, the second-highest ranked state, \u201creflect our community\u2019s collective efforts to expand access to care and support resilience for both adults and youth,\u201d the State of Hawai\u2019i Department of Health said via email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72wlr600163b6nu62b4aj4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAt the same time, the report highlights areas where we must continue to improve, particularly youth access to services,\u201d the department  said. \u201cWe remain committed to advancing mental health for all Hawai\u2019i residents.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72wjyk00103b6nhcy7i75a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Two factors that drove Nevada\u2019s ranking down to last place were the highest rates of youth depression and youth who didn\u2019t receive preventive care in the past year, suggesting a significant lack of services for that group, Reinert said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg80gxn700003b6n0lyv932n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cA\ufeffddressing the state\u2019s mental health crisis remains a top priority for Governor (Joe) Lombardo and policymakers in Nevada,\u201d the Nevada Health Authority said via email. \u201cThe state is taking a comprehensive approach to tackling the state\u2019s long-standing mental and behavioral health challenges by strengthening our crisis response system, expanding the behavioral health workforce through loan repayment incentives and telehealth in rural areas, reforming the forensic mental health system with new treatment facilities, and improving access to children\u2019s behavioral health services through expanded community care and higher Medicaid reimbursements.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg80ikl300023b6ni0rwqw60@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis includes investing more than $100 million annually to grow the provider network through expanded Medicaid coverage of services,\u201d the department added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72x12a001c3b6njg3lk3gm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Low-ranking states may also benefit from greater investment in public health services \u2014 promoting whole-person health and prevention of mental health conditions \u2014 that can be implemented in primary care offices, schools and other community settings, Reinert said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72x12a001d3b6ngippi1iv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CNN has contacted for comment the human services department for New Jersey, the third-highest ranked state, but did not get a response. The relevant government departments for Arizona, the second-lowest rated state, and Alabama, the third-lowest scored state, could not comment in time for publication.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72x12a001f3b6nn8o04efp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The MHA report is policy-focused, but all individuals can be advocates for mental health, Reinert said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72wrb200193b6nyc5dr0j9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEvery person has the power to be able to tell not only your public health officials, but also your state legislators, what is happening in your state and what you would like to see change,\u201d she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72xjuk001l3b6n4fj8job3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For anyone struggling with their own mental health, \u201cwe would also encourage you to take a <a href=\"https:\/\/screening.mhanational.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">mental health screen<\/a> on Mental Health America\u2019s website to see where your mental health is landing, access support and take care of yourself and the people around you as best that you can,\u201d Reinert said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg72xal9001j3b6n35ay5bq1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For help with substance use issues, search the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/findtreatment.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">treatment locator<\/a>.
