{"id":183437,"date":"2025-10-01T21:09:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T21:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/183437\/"},"modified":"2025-10-01T21:09:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T21:09:09","slug":"ottawa-denies-marineland-request-to-export-remaining-beluga-whales-to-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/183437\/","title":{"rendered":"Ottawa denies Marineland request to export remaining beluga whales to China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ottawa has denied a request from <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/marineland\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marineland<\/a> to send its remaining beluga whales to China, Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758298208_703_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The federal government will not grant an export permit to ship the 30 whales to the Chimelong Ocean Kingdom aquarium, she said.<\/p>\n<p>They are the last captive whales in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty whales \u2014 one killer whale and 19 belugas \u2014 have died at the Niagara Falls, Ont., tourist attraction since 2019, according to a database created by The Canadian Press based on internal documents and official statements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo approve the request would have meant a continued life in captivity and a return to public entertainment,\u201d Thompson said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>She said the decision is consistent with a 2019 law that banned whale and dolphin captivity, made entertainment shows illegal and forbade breeding.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a very difficult decision to make, but it is rooted in the Fisheries Act and I\u2019m proud that in Canada we do have an act that\u2019s very specific around the treatment of whales in particular, and how it is not OK to keep them in captivity for entertainment purposes,\u201d she told Parliament Hill reporters on Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll whales belong in the ocean, not in tanks for entertainment purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1758298209_554_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get the day's top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get the day&#8217;s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson said she is open to \u201clooking at other decisions that really speak to the health and well-being of the whales.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Toronto<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Asked what will happen next, she said: \u201cThat decision sits with Marineland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marineland did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but has maintained that it treats its whales in accordance with the law.<\/p>\n<p>Marineland closed to the public in late summer 2024 and has not reopened. It did not open this year as it looks to sell the park and the vast swath of land it owns near Horseshoe Falls. Documents obtained by The Canadian Press earlier this year through freedom of information laws state a US-based group won\u2019t be granted a Crown lease for 81 hectares of land and water near Wine Harbour, NS, unless the landowners grant unanimous consent.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario is responsible for enforcing animal welfare laws and has conducted a sprawling, ongoing investigation into Marineland since 2020. Inspectors have visited the park more than 200 times and issued 33 orders for compliance.<\/p>\n<p>The province still has four long-term outstanding orders against Marineland. Those are focused on the water quality, the maintenance and repair of the water system, proper record-keeping for whales and dolphins and the condition of enclosures and enrichment level for dolphins, seals and sea lions, the Ministry of the Solicitor General has said.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, the province declared all marine mammals at Marineland in distress, citing poor water.
