{"id":183665,"date":"2025-10-01T23:13:21","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T23:13:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/183665\/"},"modified":"2025-10-01T23:13:21","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T23:13:21","slug":"brampton-votes-to-keep-speed-cameras-despite-fords-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/183665\/","title":{"rendered":"Brampton votes to keep speed cameras despite Ford\u2019s ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Brampton city council has voted unanimously to continue its automated speed enforcement (ASE) program, despite Premier Doug Ford\u2019s promise to repeal the provincial legislation that allows municipalities to operate the cameras. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The motion by Councillor Rowena Santos and backed by all councillors comes a week after Ford announced <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/en\/release\/1006534\/ontario-protecting-taxpayers-by-banning-municipal-speed-cameras\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/en\/release\/1006534\/ontario-protecting-taxpayers-by-banning-municipal-speed-cameras\">plans for legislation<\/a> to remove more than 700 municipal speed cameras operating in 40 municipalities. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Ford has repeatedly framed the cameras as \u201ca cash grab,\u201d but critics say dismantling them would undo years of progress on road safety and waste millions already invested.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This program saves lives\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI am deeply disappointed by the Premier\u2019s decision,\u201d Santos said Wednesday. \u201cThis program saves lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cLike many other municipalities, Brampton has just completed installing new cameras and has made significant investments in this program, which has already reduced speeding, prevented collisions, and protected our most vulnerable residents. To dismantle it now undermines public safety and wastes taxpayer dollars,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DU5UDH57ZBCGLPZJX5PPIKCBS4.png\"  width=\"800\" height=\"444\"\/>ASE A visual display from city officials of what the impact of getting struck by a car looks like (City of Brampton photo). <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Santos stressed that Brampton\u2019s program follows provincial best practices, with ticketing thresholds based on expert consultation, 90-day advance signage, and all locations published online. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Officials say the average speed of a ticketed driver in Brampton is 15.7 km\/h over the posted limit, which she said shows enforcement is \u201creasonable and aligned with best practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Her motion called for continued use of ASE while addressing provincial concerns through transparency and ensuring revenue goes directly back into road safety initiatives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">However, it should be noted that the legislation permitting the cameras is entirely under the purview of the provincial government.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018All or nothing deal,\u2019 minister says<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The vote sets up a direct confrontation with plans outlined by the Ford government. Speaking to CP24, Ontario Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria has reinforced Ford\u2019s position, suggesting this is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VIFPCLSeqy4\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VIFPCLSeqy4\">\u201call or nothing deal\u201d<\/a> and that every municipality is expected to comply. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It\u2019s worth noting that Ford\u2019s stance is a reversal of his own government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/laws\/regulation\/r19398\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/laws\/regulation\/r19398\">2019 law<\/a> that initially gave municipalities the power to install automated speed enforcement cameras.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">His plan would force cities to replace the devices with new warning signage by mid-November, with permanent flashing-light signs in place by 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow has also vowed to defend her city\u2019s program, urging residents to pressure their MPPs and repeating her message that \u201cspeed kills.\u201d Other municipalities including police chiefs across Ontario have similarly spoken out in hopes of convincing the Premier to reconsider.<\/p>\n<p>Residents and next steps<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Public opinion also remains divided. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Nearly 200 people submitted feedback to CTV News Toronto this month, with some supporting the devices and others criticizing them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Despite the push, Santos said she believes compromise is possible. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cBrampton is very close to getting this right,\u201d she said. \u201cI urge Premier Ford to meet with Mayor Patrick Brown and other municipal leaders to find a balanced compromise.
