That&#8217;s baseball. You need to hit pitches. You need to find the barrel. The Tigers left 15 men on base in the game, going 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position.\u00a0AP Photo\/Sue Ogrocki<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the Guardians scored five runs in the eighth inning off relievers <a data-player-guid=\"926473fd-6b4f-3a44-979d-302df885bd5a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/5294127\/troy-melton\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Troy Melton<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"893aed7a-a013-3133-b39f-d61a6d7b2da2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/5197093\/brant-hurter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brant Hurter<\/a> to break it open.<\/p>\n<p>Detroit became the first team to strand 15 runners in the playoffs since the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"053868c7-8bff-5edb-3cb6-f5490f33ef99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/laa\/los-angeles-angels\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Angels<\/a> had 16 in Game 2 of the 2009 AL Championship Series at the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"2b9cedf3-ce60-0bcf-fafe-8cd055255685\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/nyy\/new-york-yankees\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Yankees<\/a>. Hinch said. &#8220;It was a hard-fought game, and the score doesn&#8217;t really indicate how close the game was. I guess.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>B\u00e1ez initially was credited with a two-run single as <a data-player-guid=\"1ec57ee8-ffaf-3029-8f7c-8cad4f857fe0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4345620\/dillon-dingler\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dillon Dingler<\/a> also raced home, but a video review ruled that <a data-player-guid=\"b376a0d1-9e60-b7b9-b6a4-0653839f9520\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/38420\/zach-mckinstry\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zach McKinstry<\/a> was tagged out at third base before Dingler touched the plate. McKinstry had been called safe by umpire Stu Scheurwater.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of a 2-1 lead in the fourth, the score remained tied until the eighth.<\/p>\n<p>Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/p>\n<p>2 Related<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was like a four-minute delay, like that tells you exactly how close that play is,&#8221; Hinch said. &#8220;I don&#8217;t mind that at all. It&#8217;s just McKinstry is faster than Dingler in going two bases.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Greene, who led the Tigers with 36 homers and 111 RBIs in the regular season, supported McKinstry&#8217;s decision to try and grab an extra base.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We all thought he was safe,&#8221; Greene said. &#8220;We&#8217;ve been going from first to third all year, and we&#8217;re not going to change now. That&#8217;s the way we play.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Greene also expressed no issues with Hinch&#8217;s decision to pinch hit for him in the seventh with two on and one out. Greene was 1 for 3, but <a data-player-guid=\"6bc49a3b-b07f-315b-da2c-d425aa3367c4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/34958\/jahmai-jones\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jahmai Jones<\/a> took his spot and struck out against left-hander <a data-player-guid=\"ce75e681-a7cf-36b6-850f-e4f6acf341ee\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4228579\/tim-herrin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Herrin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jones batted .212 (7 of 33) as a pinch hitter in the regular season and had a .288 average with seven homers and 17 RBIs in 104 at-bats against lefties.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A.J. thought that was the right call and we&#8217;re not going to think twice about it,&#8221; Greene said. &#8220;I didn&#8217;t think anything. I trust him and I trust his judgment.
