Benedict Cumberbatch called Hollywood a \u201cgrossly wasteful industry\u201d during an interview on \u201cRuthie\u2019s Table 4\u201d podcast. The Oscar nominee is no stranger to massive studio productions given his role as Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Cumberbatch loves undergoing a \u201cbody transformation\u201d for his work, he also says \u201cit\u2019s horrific eating beyond your appetite.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGoing back to responsibility and resourcefulness and sustainability, it\u2019s just like, what am I doing? I could feed a family with the amount I\u2019m eating,\u201d Cumberbatch said, noting he would eat five meals a day while getting into Doctor Strange shape in addition to snacks like boiled eggs, almonds and cheese in between meals.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a grossly wasteful industry,\u201d he continued. \u201cThink about set builds that aren\u2019t recycled, think about transport, think about food, think about housing, but also light and energy. The amount of wattage you need to create daylight and consistent light in a studio environment. It\u2019s a lot of energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cumberbatch admitted that actors are routinely slammed and branded as hypocrites when they speak out in support of sustainability in Hollywood given how wasteful the industry is, but the actor noted that he tries to \u201cpush the green initiative\u201d on his film sets as both an actor and a producer.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to give the crew plastic bottles,\u201d he said as an example. If you\u2019re in the middle of a desert and you can\u2019t get glass bottles there, fair enough. But we\u2019re in 21st Century.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cumberbatch is on a press tour for his upcoming movie \u201cThe Roses,\u201d a reimagining of the 1981 novel\u00a0\u201cThe War of the Roses\u201d\u00a0by\u00a0Warren Adler. The book previously spawned a 1989 film adaptation of the same name starring Michael Douglas Kathleen Turner Danny DeVito G. D. Spradlin. Cumberbatch\u2019s new version co-stars Olivia Colman. The duo play a married couple who self-destruct during a bitter divorce.<\/p>\n
