{"id":185540,"date":"2025-10-02T17:56:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T17:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/185540\/"},"modified":"2025-10-02T17:56:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T17:56:08","slug":"coco-gauff-explains-her-reasons-why-she-signed-second-letter-demanding-change-at-every-grand-slam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/185540\/","title":{"rendered":"Coco Gauff explains her reasons why she signed second letter demanding change at every Grand Slam"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The top players on the ATP and WTA Tours have been asking for more money from the Grand Slams recently.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/qinwen-zheng-gives-her-opinion-on-letter-sent-to-grand-slams-by-top-players-asking-for-more-prize-money\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">top ten players in men\u2019s and women\u2019s tennis sent a letter to the Grand Slams<\/a> demanding a fairer share of the revenue.<\/p>\n<p>Another letter has now been sent, with players piling the pressure on the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/us-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"688\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/GettyImages-1235060177-1024x688.jpg\" alt=\"An image of the US Open logo in 2021\" class=\"wp-image-121185\" \/>Photo Illustration by Pavlo Gonchar\/SOPA Images\/LightRocket via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Two-time Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff has signed both letters, along with some of her biggest rivals on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/wta\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WTA Tour<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Following her quarterfinal win in Beijing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/coco-gauff\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gauff<\/a> explained why she decided to sign off on the second letter.<\/p>\n<p>Coco Gauff thinks change is important for the tennis \u2018ecosystem\u2019<\/p>\n<p>During her post-match press conference, the world number three was asked why she added her name to both letters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think for me personally, I think for the long run of our sport, the whole ecosystem, I think it\u2019s really important,\u201d said Gauff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we know in this sport, the Grand Slams are generating the most revenue, at least the stats and the percentages they gave me, when you look at the percentage of that revenue going to prize money, it is not the same as the WTA and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/atp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ATP<\/a>, even though they\u2019re generating less revenue than the Slams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"625\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/GettyImages-2237563961-1024x625.jpg\" alt=\"Coco Gauff speaks to the media after her third-round win at the 2025 China Open\" class=\"wp-image-134083\" \/>Photo by Robert Prange\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Gauff then proceeded to explain what some people are failing to understand about the letters being sent to the Grand Slams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s important for the whole ecosystem of the sport,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes people are focused on just the prize money. We\u2019re not talking about just raising the prize money for the champion, but trickling all the way down to qualies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe kind of want them to invest more in the tour as a whole, not only when it comes to prize money, but the well-being of players and just trickling that down, all the way down to the lower-ranked players as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur 200th best player, 300th best player are struggling to make ends meet. I want to leave the sport better than I found it,\u201d said Gauff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, all the top-ten players agree. I think this is the first time on the tour we\u2019ve gotten both the top ten of both men and women to sign something and agree to something. I think it\u2019s a big step.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know they\u2019re having conversations. Hopefully, we can reach a solution in the near future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gauff wants to see her fellow players earn more, but surely won\u2019t have any concerns about the prize money she\u2019s received during her career.<\/p>\n<p>After all, she received the biggest prize fund in WTA history last year\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Coco Gauff earned $4.8 million in Saudi Arabia <\/p>\n<p>Last November, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/chris-evert-says-what-stood-out-about-coco-gauff-during-her-wta-finals-win-over-qinwen-zheng\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gauff won the WTA Finals<\/a> in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, defeating Qinwen Zheng in the final.<\/p>\n<p>In doing so, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/coco-gauff-reacts-to-winning-the-biggest-prize-money-ever-in-wta-history-as-shes-asked-what-shell-spend-the-millions-on\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gauff earned $4.805 million<\/a>, the biggest prize money cheque in the history of the WTA Tour.<\/p>\n<p>When told about the money she\u2019d just earned, Gauff could hardly believe the figures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh really! I didn\u2019t know, jeez. I knew it was some money but I didn\u2019t know it was that much. It means a lot to me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not someone who likes to spend a lot of money to be honest. I don\u2019t know what I will do with it.
