‘I haven’t discovered how to perform in them yet’: Team Denmark backs Vingegaard to finally crack the classics code at European Championships.<\/p>\n

Jonas Vingegaard<\/a> will be odd-man-out Sunday morning when he lines up alongside Tadej Poga\u010dar<\/a> and Remco Evenepoel<\/a> at the European Championships<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This weekend\u2019s title fight will be a very rare foray into one-day racing for Vingegaard.<\/p>\n

Unlike hybrid superheroes Evenepoel and Poga\u010dar, the newly crowned Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a champion just hasn\u2019t found a way to make classics racing \u201cclick.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t ridden many one-day races recently because I haven\u2019t really discovered how to perform in them yet,\u201d Vingegaard told Wielerflits<\/a> soon after La Vuelta.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only time I won a one-day race at the Dr\u00f4me Classic was the day after another one-day race. So you couldn\u2019t really call it a one-day.<\/p>\n

\u201cI find it difficult to figure out what I need to do the day before a one-day race \u2013 what I need to do to be good at them,\u201d Vingegaard said.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s perhaps no surprise Vingegaard hasn\u2019t deciphered the art of one-day racing.<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old has followed an old-school diet of stage-racing in his ride to the front echelon of the pro peloton.<\/p>\n

Hilly monuments and even cobbled classics? They\u2019re for Pogi and Remco.<\/p>\n

Sunday\u2019s Ardeche championships will be only the 26th one-day race of his 10 year pro career, and just his second in nearly three years.<\/p>\n

His younger rivals already count two or three times more. Poga\u010dar has started 84 one-dayers, Evenepoel, 61.<\/p>\n

Vingegaard\u2019s last five one-day classics:<\/p>\n

August 2024: Donostia San Sebastian: DNF
\nOctober 2022: Il Lombardia: 16th
\nApril 2022: Li\u00e8ge-Bastogne-Li\u00e8ge: DNF
\nApril 2022: La Fl\u00e8che Wallonne: DNF
\nMarch 2022: GP Denain: 76th<\/p>\n

But Vingegard is clearly classics-curious.<\/p>\n

He planned to make his long-awaited elite debut in Denmark\u2019s deep red last weekend at the Rwanda road worlds, but later rowed back the idea of racing again so soon after his Tour de France-Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a double.<\/p>\n

With the Europeans on Sunday, Vingegaard couldn\u2019t have chosen a much tougher day<\/a> for his classics rebirth.<\/p>\n

Sure, there\u2019s none of the altitude and only around 70 percent of the climbing of Kigali, but the competition is no less fierce.<\/p>\n

Poga\u010dar and Evenepoel will be throwing haymakers for a third time in 10 days after their world title clashes.<\/p>\n

A longer break since the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a and an easier parcours opens the door to a whole new range of European title contenders.<\/p>\n

One-day noobie or not, Vingegaard takes headliner status over even Mads Pedersen and Mattias Skjelmose in Denmark\u2019s European road race team.<\/p>\n

Danish national coach Michael M\u00f8rk\u00f8v said Vingegaard has no reason to count himself out for this juicy, rare, one-day clash with Poga\u010dar and Evenepoel.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t really believe he\u2019s weak in one-days,\u201d M\u00f8rk\u00f8v recently told Feltet<\/a>. \u201cHe has already performed remarkably well several times in the first stage of races he has participated in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, Vingegaard emerged from his injury setback this spring more explosive and more aggressive<\/a> than ever.<\/p>\n

M\u00f8rk\u00f8v highlighted how his outsprinting Mathieu van der Poel and Evenepoel<\/a> this June when Poga\u010dar won the first stage of the Crit\u00e9rium du Dauphin\u00e9 was a sign of his one-day capacity.<\/p>\n

Beyond that, Vingegaard showed through the hills of Brittany and Normandie he\u2019s got the short-twitch punch and racing nous to match his monument-munching Tour de France rivals.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe did incredibly well there [at the Dauphin\u00e9]. It\u2019s hard to argue that a first stage is not equivalent to a one-day race,\u201d M\u00f8rk\u00f8v said. \u201cHe attacks deep into the final and then rides a tough sprint against Van der Poel, where he finishes second.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat tells me that he can certainly perform in a one-day race.\u201d<\/p>\n

M\u00f8rk\u00f8v added separately that Team Denmark refuses to be counted as underdogs for Sunday\u2019s hilly French championships \u2013 Vingegaard\u2019s questionable one-day capacity or not.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe European championships has two challenging climbs,\u201d M\u00f8rk\u00f8v told TV2<\/a> when he confirmed the Danish 8. \u201cThese are challenges suited to lightweight and explosive riders.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re privileged to have such riders, especially Jonas Vingegaard and Mattias Skjelmose. We have a strong team around them, and our clear ambition is to become European champions.\u201d<\/p>\n

The European championships will be a ride into the unknown for Vingegaard.<\/p>\n

Unlike Poga\u010dar and Evenepoel, he\u2019ll arrive into the Ardeche this weekend with the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a in his legs.<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old will have a deeper type of fatigue than travel-weary foes who only recently jetted back from Rwanda.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard to set any expectations. I\u2019ve done two grand tours, so I don\u2019t really know where I\u2019ll be in terms of form,\u201d Vingegaard said after he returned home from a madcap final Vuelta stage in Madrid.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, I\u2019m in good shape now and trying to keep riding it, but you never know if I\u2019ll be good or bad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vingegaard has nothing to lose in his quest to crack the one-day code this weekend.<\/p>\n

Second in the Tour de France and first in the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a is already some summer for the Visma-Lease a Bike star.<\/p>\n

But if Vingegaard can figure out how to dial in his preparation, there\u2019s no reason why he can\u2019t be barge in on Evenepoel and Poga\u010dar and raid the white and blue-striped Euro jersey.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know riders who train for three hours the day before a one-day race and treat the session as if it were a race,\u201d Vingegaard told Wielerflits. \u201cI don\u2019t know if that\u2019s the recipe, but it\u2019s something I could try.\u201d<\/p>\n
