The Maple Ridge Boxing Club turned in one of its best overall performances in recent years, with its young boxers winning in silver glove and bronze glove competitions.

The fights were held in Chilliwack, and Maple Ridge club head coach Jason Burke was impressed with the resurgence of the sport, as there were two rings busy with matches through Sept. 26, 27 and 28.

The storied Ridge club brought nine fighters to the event, and the result was five champions. The silver glove champ was Diego Cerros, and bronze glove championships – for novice fighters – were won by Anthony Thomas and his sister Ann Thomas, Gurmann Singh, Damian Seckler and Brice McKay.

To get to the final, Cerros had to get through a boxer who had beaten him in the bronze glove championships earlier, Burke noted.

“So he got redemption in the silver gloves, by a unanimous decision,” said the coach.

Blaydon Burke also fought well and was a runner-up, and Aidan Haggerty and Malcolm Kengni both competed.

“We’re very proud of our boxers – it was a great showing,” said Burke, noting that the nine fighters was the most the club has had at an event for a long time.

“This is a new group of up-and-coming fighters.”

The club will also be sending fighters to golden gloves championships soon, said Burke.
