{"id":186976,"date":"2025-10-03T08:02:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-03T08:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/186976\/"},"modified":"2025-10-03T08:02:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T08:02:08","slug":"can-a-satellite-unlock-the-secrets-of-the-universe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/186976\/","title":{"rendered":"Can a satellite unlock the secrets of the universe?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A space professor who helped design a groundbreaking satellite has said it will &#8220;profoundly change our understanding of the universe&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Euclid satellite, launched by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-hampshire-66072111?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Byahoo.north.america%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Elon Musk&#039;s Space X company;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Elon Musk&#8217;s Space X company<\/a>, was developed by a team that included Professor Adam Amara, from the University of Surrey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It is two years into a six-year mission to gather high-quality images that will help astronomers gain insights into the nature of dark matter and dark energy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Prof Amara, from the Isle of Wight, hopes it will spark the imaginations of future space scientists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">No previous space telescope has been able to combine the breadth, depth and sharpness of vision that Euclid can.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The James Webb telescope, for example, has much higher resolution, but cannot cover the amount of sky that Euclid does in one shot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Experts from the University of Oxford are among those combing through the data the satellite is providing.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Professor Adam Amara looking at the camera and smiling. Behind him is a white dome which has a telescope inside of.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/e97265475b40754e071edc777feee6e4.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Professor Adam Amara said the images from the satellite were &#8220;almost works of art&#8221; [BBC]<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Reflecting on two years since the launch, Prof Amara said: &#8220;We have 2,000 people across the world working every day, night and day, to process these images and look for little gems in what we can find out about the universe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;It&#8217;s an incredible amount of effort people are putting in, and it&#8217;s wonderful to see the results as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;To see the images come through and be even better than expected was absolutely incredible because we all had sleepless nights.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He said the images were &#8220;just breathtaking in themselves&#8221; and &#8220;almost works of art&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;We&#8217;re still in the middle of a journey. But what we&#8217;ve seen this year is the interim results,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;A lot of them, led by people here in the UK, are already saying Euclid is delivering as good as and better than we expected.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He hopes Euclid will answer questions about dark matter and dark energy &#8220;which still remain a mystery&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;There isn&#8217;t an experiment like it in space. It&#8217;s unique,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;It is going to unlock the secrets of the universe, but it is going to take time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"The image shows three students smiling at the camera. He had brown hair. behind them are four TV screens showing space themed images. \" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/6e07fd841e1c930044be389c5634cb1d.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Sriraksha, Astha and Harry are Professor Amara&#8217;s students [BBC]<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In the Space Centre at the University of Surrey, Prof Amara&#8217;s students hope to become the next generation of cosmologists and astrophysicists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Harry, who is studying for a masters, is interested in dark matter &#8220;because we just know so little about it&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;I just want to keep answering questions about astronomy and astrophysics,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Astha is studying for her PHD and believes the UK offers &#8220;abundant opportunities&#8221; for students studying astrophysics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">She said: &#8220;I definitely see myself working with satellites analysing data in the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sriraksha, a masters student, got into astrophysics because of her &#8220;love of star gazing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;I just want to understand how everything is connected,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Prof Amara said: &#8220;My greatest ambition is to make sure UK scientists, especially the young ones, have more opportunities going forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Euclid is one of these multigenerational projects to answer really big questions and I just can&#8217;t wait to see what the answer comes out as.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What is Euclid&#8217;s job?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Euclid is surveying a third of the heavens to get some clues about the nature of so-called dark matter and dark energy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">These unknown &#8220;influencers&#8221; appear to control the shape and expansion of everything that&#8217;s out there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Researchers concede, however, they know virtually nothing about them, even though they probably account for 95% of the contents of the cosmos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Neither dark matter nor dark energy are directly detectable.
