Regarding the possibility of moving the 2033 PGA Championship away from Bethpage Black after the fan issues at the Ryder Cup last weekend<\/a>, longtime golf reporter Brendan Porath, speaking yesterday on \u201cGolf Today,\u201d said, \u201cI do think they should consider it. I don\u2019t think they will actually make the maneuver to move it away.\u201d Golfweek\u2019s Eamon Lynch said that the \u201cbelligerence of the Bethpage fans\u201d did not \u201cactually surprise anybody.\u201d Lynch: \u201cEveryone kind of expected this. It happens every event at Bethpage. It\u2019s happened at the PGA. It\u2019s happened at two U.S. Opens.\u201d Porath believes Bethpage Black \u201cseems incapable of hosting a big time event with any sort of civility, and this is not a pearl clutching moment.\u201d This is just \u201csomething that\u2019s toxic and beyond the pale, just not acceptable for any sport, let alone golf.\u201d Porath: \u201cThey should consider if they can hold a massive fan-attended event there anymore\u201d (“Golf Today,” Golf Channel, 9\/29). <\/p>\n

NO EXCUSES: GOLFCHANNEL.com\u2019s Rex Hoggard wrote the \u201cvitriol and boorish behavior the European Ryder Cup team endured at Bethpage is unacceptable.\u201d The captains, players, media and fans \u201cknew what this Ryder Cup was going to be when the PGA of America announced in 2013 it was bringing the matches\u201d to Bethpage. Former PGA President Ted Bishop said, \u201cThings got out of hand, that was disappointing. We knew the crowds would be like that.\u201d Bishop had \u201cno interest in apologizing or justifying anyone\u2019s behavior at Bethpage.\u201d However, Hoggard wrote it is \u201cimportant to understand that the crowd, for better or worse, was one of the primary factors in bringing the event to the Black Course\u201d (GOLFCHANNEL.com, 9\/29<\/a>). <\/p>\n

WAY OUT OF LINE: GOLF\u2019s Nick Piastowski wrote Saturday \u201cfelt disgusting\u201d to him. We all \u201cknew what very likely could come, and then it did.\u201d Piastowski: \u201cLet\u2019s make a pact, right here, right now. When you\u2019re a fan: Leave families alone. Don\u2019t get abusive.\u202fLet the players play. Deal?\u201d (GOLF, 9\/29<\/a>). GOLFWEEK\u2019s Cameron Jourdan wrote the fans \u201cget an F\u201d for their performance at Bethpage. N.Y. fans are \u201cabout as harsh as they come, but this week was different.\u201d Most fans were fine, but there were \u201cway too many who were too comfortable crossing the line\u201d (GOLFWEEK, 9\/29<\/a>).<\/p>\n

OUT OF CONTROL: In London, Bryan Armen Graham wrote the tournament\u2019s response to the \u201cugly crowd conduct on Saturday was woeful.\u201d Extra security and a \u201cphalanx\u201d of N.Y. state troopers \u201cmaterialized around [Rory] McIlroy\u2019s match at the turn.\u201d A couple of spectators \u201cwere ejected near the main grandstands.\u201d The PGA of America said that it \u201cbolstered policing and pushed more frequent spectator etiquette messages on the big screens.\u201d Graham: \u201cFine, as far as it goes. But once a thousand people have decided a backswing is their cue, you can\u2019t manage it with a graphic and a frown. Enforcement has to be swift, visible and consequential or it becomes permission by another name\u201d (London GUARDIAN, 9\/28<\/a>).<\/p>\n
