FAIRFAX, Va. \u2013 The George Mason men’s soccer team returns to Atlantic 10 play with a road match against local rival George Washington on Saturday with the opening kick scheduled for 3 p.m. at GW Soccer Field in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n

George Mason (4-3-1, 1-0-1 A-10) and George Washington (2-6-2, 0-2-0 A-10) are meeting for the 51st time, the most games against an opponent in Patriots’ men’s soccer program history.<\/p>\n

Last year, the Patriots defeated the Revolutionaries, 5-2 on Sept. 28, 2024 at George Mason Stadium in the 50th meeting between the two programs.\u00a0 Forward\u00a0Marek Gonda<\/a>\u00a0and midfielder\u00a0Quentin Clain<\/a>\u00a0each scored two goals.\u00a0 The Patriots outshot the Revolutionaries, 27-7, including a 10-0 advantage in shots on goal.\u00a0 George Mason had 10 corner kicks and George Washington finished with three corner kicks in the match.\u00a0 The 27 shots and 10 shots on goal were both season highs for the Patriots.<\/p>\n

The Patriots are 12-10-1 at home, 14-8-2 on the road and 2-0-1 in games played at a neutral site all-time against George Washington.\u00a0 George Mason has faced William & Mary 49 times, followed by American (47), James Madison (41) and Old Dominion (41).<\/p>\n

Last time out, the Patriots defeated Loyola Chicago, 3-0, in their first-ever visit to Loyola Soccer Park in Chicago, Ill.\u00a0 Junior midfielder James Eliuda<\/a> scored his second goal of the season (game-winner), sophomore midfielder\u00a0Martim Sereno<\/a>\u00a0netted his fifth goal of the year and junior forward\u00a0Kelly Janssen<\/a>\u00a0tallied his third goal in the last two matches, while graduate student goalkeeper\u00a0Jaume Salvado<\/a>\u00a0recorded his second shutout of the season to lift the Patriots past the Ramblers.<\/p>\n

George Mason outshot Loyola Chicago, 13-12, including a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal.\u00a0 The Patriots had seven corner kicks while the Ramblers had three corner kicks in the match.<\/p>\n

The Patriots lead the Atlantic 10 in goals scored (19) and goals\u00a0per game (2.37).\u00a0 Sophomore forward\u00a0Martim Sereno<\/a>\u00a0leads the conference in points per game (1.38), is tied for second in the league in goals (5), points (11) and shots on goal (10),\u00a0is ninth in shots (19) and shots per game (2.38), and is 10th in the league in shots (17) in eight games.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Graduate student forward\u00a0Jacobo Sanfeliu<\/a>\u00a0is tied for third in the conference in both goals (4) and points (10), and is tied for fourth in points per game (1.25).\u00a0\u00a0Both of Eliuda’s goals this season have been game-winners, tied for the most in the league.<\/p>\n

The Patriots have three players ranked among the league leaders in assists.\u00a0 Graduate student midfielder\u00a0Sergio Gonzalez Fernandez<\/a>\u00a0is tied for second-most\u00a0(4), while graduate student defender\u00a0Jordi Navio Sanchez<\/a>\u00a0and junior midfielder\u00a0James Eliuda<\/a><\/a>\u00a0are tied for the third-most (3) in the conference.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Graduate student goalkeeper\u00a0Jaume Salvado<\/a>\u00a0ranks second in the A-10 in saves per game (4.63) and is third in total saves (37).<\/p>\n

The Patriots were predicted to finish second in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll as voted on by the league’s head coaches. Graduate student defender\u00a0Javi S\u00e1nchez<\/a>, junior midfielder\u00a0James Eliuda<\/a><\/a>\u00a0and sophomore forward\u00a0Martim Sereno<\/a>\u00a0were selected to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Team..<\/p>\n

Head coach\u00a0Rich Costanzo<\/a>\u00a0is in his fourth season with the Patriots and is two wins shy of 25 with the Patriots.\u00a0 He was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year last season after leading the Patriots to one of the most successful regular seasons in program history.\u00a0 Costanzo guided the club to the Atlantic 10 regular season title for the first time in program history in 2024.\u00a0 The Patriots finished the season 13-4-1 overall, won seven of eight matches at home in the regular season, went 6-1-1 in conference play to post six wins in the A-10 regular season for the first time, and after earning the top-seed in the A-10 Championship, advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0

\nThe Patriots finished the 2024 A-10 regular season third in both goals (33) and goals per match (2.2) and tied for the third-fewest goals allowed (17).

\nSCOUTING GEORGE WASHINGTON<\/p>\n

George Washington has an overall record of 2-6-2 including a mark of 0-2-0 in Atlantic 10 play. \u00a0The Revolutionaries are 2-2-1 at home and 0-4-1 on the road.<\/p>\n

Last time out, George Washington fell at St. Bonaventure, 2-1 (Sept. 27) in St. Bonaventure, N.Y.\u00a0 The Bonnies outshot the Revolutionaries 13-12 including a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.<\/p>\n

ABOUT THE PATRIOTS<\/p>\n

The Patriots have 14 returners and 13 newcomers on the roster heading into the 2025 season under fourth-year head coach\u00a0Rich Costanzo<\/a>\u00a0(Maryland, ’08).\u00a0 Assistant coaches\u00a0Noel Orozco<\/a>\u00a0(St. Bonaventure, ’17) and\u00a0Michael Callahan<\/a>\u00a0(North Carolina, ’08) also enter their fourth year with the Patriots.<\/p>\n

Junior returners include goalkeeper\u00a0Jack Desroches<\/a>\u00a0(Virginia Beach, Va.), defender\u00a0David Garcia<\/a>\u00a0(Woodbridge, Va.), midfielders\u00a0James Eliuda<\/a><\/a>\u00a0(Juba, South Sudan),\u00a0Brent Fields<\/a>\u00a0(Alexandria, Va.),\u00a0Quentin Clain<\/a>\u00a0(Villiers le Bel, France) and\u00a0Javier Montava<\/a>\u00a0(Alcoy, Spain) along with forwards\u00a0Abdul Kamara<\/a>\u00a0(Woodbridge, Va.) and\u00a0Kelly Janssen<\/a>\u00a0(Sebastopol, Calif.).\u00a0 Forward\u00a0Martim Sereno<\/a>\u00a0(Mira de Aire, Portugal) enters his sophomore season.<\/p>\n

The Patriots added eight transfers during the offseason.\u00a0 Graduate students entering their first year with the Patriots are goalkeeper\u00a0Fernando Carreon Garcia<\/a>\u00a0(Saltillo, Mexico), defender\u00a0Elijah Jackson<\/a>\u00a0(Summerfield, N.C.), midfielders Sergio Fernandez (Villanueva del Pardillo, Spain) and\u00a0Kenzo Brito<\/a>\u00a0(Sao Paulo, Brazil), and forwards\u00a0Jacobo Sanfeliu<\/a>\u00a0(Barcelona, Spain) and\u00a0Nacho Diaz Barragan<\/a>\u00a0(al Maria, Spain).<\/p>\n

Senior midfielder\u00a0Mouhamed Tucker<\/a>\u00a0(Dakar, Senegal) and junior defender\u00a0Yannick Mambo<\/a>\u00a0(Kinshasa, Congo) also enter their first year at George Mason.<\/p>\n

Five freshmen enter their first year with the Patriots.\u00a0 Forward\u00a0Cristian Ramos<\/a>\u00a0(Lorton, Va.), midfielders\u00a0John Balkey<\/a>\u00a0(Leesburg, Va.) and\u00a0Alen Kapetanovic<\/a>\u00a0(Nyack, N.Y.), and forwards\u00a0Tresz McLeod<\/a>\u00a0(Wheeling, W.Va.) and\u00a0Jaime Godinho<\/a>\u00a0(Lisbon, Portugal).<\/p>\n

PATRIOTS SCHEDULE<\/p>\n

The George Mason is scheduled to play 15 regular season games, a slate that includes four matches against College Cup teams, eight matches against Atlantic 10 opponents and eight games at George Mason Stadium.<\/p>\n

Head coach\u00a0Rich Costanzo<\/a>\u00a0begins his fourth season.\u00a0 He guided the Patriots to a 13-4-1 overall record last season and a 6-1-1 mark in conference play to claim the first-ever Atlantic 10 Regular Season title in program history.\u00a0 George Mason recorded six A-10 wins in the regular season for the first time since joining the league in 2013.<\/p>\n

In the regular season, George Mason will play two matches in August, six in September and October and one in November.<\/p>\n

The Patriots played a pair of exhibition matches, facing Maryland on the road (Aug. 9,) and Pittsburgh at George Mason Stadium (Aug. 15).<\/p>\n

The Green and Gold kicked off the regular season on the road and fell to #2 Marshall (Aug. 22), 2-1, in Huntington, W.Va.<\/p>\n

The Patriots defeated No. 11 Virginia (Aug. 28) in their home opener, 4-1. George Mason sophomore forward\u00a0Martim Sereno<\/a>\u00a0scored twice for his first career two-goal game, while junior midfielder\u00a0James Eliuda<\/a><\/a>\u00a0netted his first goal of the season and graduate student midfielder\u00a0Jacobo Sanfeliu<\/a>\u00a0scored his first goal as a Patriot.<\/p>\n

The victory marked the highest-ranked win by the Patriots in 14 years and the second-highest seeded team that George Mason has beaten since they took down No. 2 Maryland on September 29, 2009.\u00a0 The win is the seventh win over a top-20 team in program history.\u00a0 The crowd of 3,077 marked the largest for a George Mason men’s soccer match in 25 years.\u00a0 The 1,385 students in attendance set a new program record.<\/p>\n

The Patriots defeated Bucknell (Sept. 2) 3-2.\u00a0 Junior midfielder\u00a0Brent Fields<\/a>\u00a0scored his first career goal, the game-winner in the 90th minute of play.\u00a0 Sophomore midfielder\u00a0Martim Sereno<\/a>\u00a0scored his third goal, while graduate student\u00a0Jacobo Sanfeliu<\/a>\u00a0tallied his second goal of the season.<\/p>\n

George Mason fell to No. 6 West Virginia, 6-4 (Sept. 7.) Graduate student forward\u00a0Jacobo Sanfeliu<\/a>\u00a0converted a penalty kick in the 30th minute for his third goal, sophomore forward\u00a0Martim Sereno<\/a>\u00a0netted his fourth goal of the year in the 31st minute, graduate student forward\u00a0Nacho Diaz Barragan<\/a>\u00a0scored his first goal with the Green and Gold in the 67th minute when he converted the penalty kick and junior forward\u00a0Abdul Kamara<\/a>\u00a0tallied his first goal of the season in the 81st minute.<\/p>\n

In the first Atlantic 10 match of the season, the Patriots played to a 1-1 home draw with Davidson (Sept. 12). Graduate student forward\u00a0Nacho Diaz Barragan<\/a>\u00a0scored late in the second half, while graduate student goalkeeper\u00a0Jaume Salvado<\/a>\u00a0stopped a penalty kick in the second half as part of a four save performance.<\/p>\n

George Mason blanked UMBC, 1-0 (Sept. 20) at Retriever Soccer Park in Baltimore, Md.\u00a0 Graduate student forward\u00a0Jacobo Sanfeliu<\/a>\u00a0scored his fourth goal of the season in the 18th minute of play for his first game winning goal in a Patriots uniform.<\/p>\n

George Mason dropped their last home match to Georgetown, 5-2 (Sept. 23). \u00a0Junior forward\u00a0Kelly Janssen<\/a>\u00a0scored in the 38th and 44th minute to recorded the second two-goal game of his career, both at George Mason Stadium.<\/p>\n

\u00a0The Patriots are home to battle in-state rival VCU (Oct. 8, 7 p.m.) before going on the road to face St. Bonaventure (Oct. 11, 7 p.m.) in St. Bonaventure, N.Y.<\/p>\n

\u00a0The Patriots return to George Mason Stadium to tangle with La Salle (Oct. 18, 7 p.m.) and travel for a non-conference matchup against William & Mary (Oct. 21, 7 p.m.) in Williamsburg, Va.<\/p>\n

\u00a0George Mason returns to league play with the final home match of the regular season against Saint Joseph’s (Oct. 25, 7 p.m.).<\/p>\n

\u00a0The Patriots wrap up the regular season on the road against Duquesne (Nov. 1, 7 p.m.) in Pittsburgh, Pa.<\/p>\n
