{"id":188552,"date":"2025-10-04T01:47:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-04T01:47:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/188552\/"},"modified":"2025-10-04T01:47:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-04T01:47:08","slug":"mark-carney-hopes-to-reach-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/188552\/","title":{"rendered":"Mark Carney hopes to reach deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to head to Washington early next week to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump \u2013 his second visit since becoming prime minister \u2013 with a source telling CTV News that potential movement is expected on steel and aluminum tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Carney will leave for Washington on Monday evening and will meet with Trump on Tuesday, in what the Prime Minister\u2019s Office (PMO) is describing as a \u201cworking visit and meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, Industry Minister Melanie Joly and Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc will accompany Carney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe Prime Minister\u2019s working visit will focus on shared priorities in a new economic and security relationship between Canada and the U.S.,\u201d according to the PMO.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">This latest visit comes as Canadian and U.S. officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/video\/2025\/10\/01\/can-carney-get-a-deal-done-with-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/video\/2025\/10\/01\/can-carney-get-a-deal-done-with-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\">try to reach a deal<\/a> on punishing American tariffs, and as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/global-affairs\/news\/2025\/09\/canada-launches-public-consultations-on-the-canada-united-states-mexico-agreement.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/global-affairs\/news\/2025\/09\/canada-launches-public-consultations-on-the-canada-united-states-mexico-agreement.html\" target=\"_blank\">review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement gets underway<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Carney has also been facing pressure from the opposition to land a win, as Trump continues to inflict new tariffs impacting Canadian businesses. Earlier this week, Trump imposed a new 10 per cent levy on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/vancouver\/article\/trump-hits-canadian-lumber-producers-with-additional-10-per-cent-tariff\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">softwood lumber<\/a> imports and a 25 per cent tariff on cabinets and furniture that are set to take effect Oct. 14.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/X5LYVINCRZDKTGFI3XIB374H2U.JPG\"  width=\"800\" height=\"534\"\/>Mark Carney Donald Trump meeting Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump engage in a meeting at the White House in Washington, D.C., Tuesday, May 6, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS\/Adrian Wyld (Adrian Wyld\/The Canadian Press) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The source, speaking on background to CTV News, said the Canadian team is \u201ccautiously optimistic\u201d there will be an agreement coming out of next week\u2019s meeting, specifically on the reduction of steel and aluminum tariffs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Over the summer, the U.S. hiked its tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50 per cent, with Canada imposing a 25 per cent counter-tariff on U.S. steel and aluminum. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The source says next week\u2019s meeting follows weeks of groundwork by LeBlanc, Canadian Ambassador to the U.S. Kirsten Hillman and Clerk of the Privy Council Michael Sabia, with the team being aware the discussions could go sideways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cYou never know what Trump is going to do,\u201d the source said to CTV News.<\/p>\n<p>No \u2018dead end\u2019 in Canada-U.S. talks: minister<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Speaking to the Senate\u2019s Foreign Affairs and International Trade Committee on Thursday, LeBlanc pointed to Trump and his administration being \u201cmoved by massive private investments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThere is a very good story to tell there, and I am hopeful that over the coming weeks and months, that can be part of a very valid, a very real, a very significant public narrative in the United States,\u201d LeBlanc said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In his testimony on Thursday, LeBlanc also said he and other officials are in regular contact with their American counterparts, and that he doesn\u2019t see a \u201cdead end\u201d in those conversations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">But while he told the committee \u201cissues are resolvable,\u201d he also conceded the relationship between the two countries may not \u201cmagically go back to what it may have been a year ago or 25 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">LeBlanc also said Canada would like to see an agreement on tariffs separate to the ongoing CUSMA renegotiation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/UVTFXQBI4RDNVERDJHVB7OQRGI.JPG\"  width=\"800\" height=\"541\"\/>Canada-U.S. trade: Dominic LeBlanc Dominic LeBlanc President of the King\u2019s Privy Council for Canada and Minister responsible for Canada-U.S. Trade, Intergovernmental Affairs, Internal Trade and One Canadian Economy appears as a witness at a Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade at the Senate Building in Ottawa on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2025. Those levies are stacked on top of any import taxes aimed at specific countries, such as Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Canada and the U.S. have been in ongoing negotiations for a new economic and security deal for months. After campaigning during the federal election on a promise to stand up to Trump, Carney and his team have since insisted they\u2019re prioritizing getting the \u201cbest deal\u201d over a timely one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The prime minister has also insisted Canada has the best trade deal because 85 per cent of exports to the U.S. remain tariff-free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Late last month, Carney announced that Canada is dropping many of its counter-tariffs by exempting goods covered by CUSMA. Asked by reporters at the time whether Trump had assured him the move would help spur negotiations, the prime minister said \u201cyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Canada also rescinded its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/article\/commerce-secretary-howard-lutnick-thanks-canada-for-dropping-digital-services-tax\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">digital services tax<\/a> back in June, which Trump publicly opposed, without securing a concession in return.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/video\/2025\/09\/21\/ctv-qp-pierre-poilievre-on-pm-carneys-deficit-the-cost-of-living-unemployment-and-more\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/video\/2025\/09\/21\/ctv-qp-pierre-poilievre-on-pm-carneys-deficit-the-cost-of-living-unemployment-and-more\/\">Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre <\/a>has been criticizing Carney for not reaching a deal with the U.S. by his self-imposed July 21 deadline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI think Mr. Carney should keep his promise. He promised that he would negotiate a win with the United States by July 21. Where\u2019s the win?\u201d Poilievre said to reporters on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Poilievre emphasized that point in a post to \u201cX\u201d on Friday, writing \u201cNo word on where the Prime Minister\u2019s elbows have gone after he backed down again and again with nothing to show for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Hoping Prime Minister Carney will keep his promise and \u201cnegotiate a win\u201d with President Trump to end the U.S. tariffs in their Tuesday meeting.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. tariffs on Canada have doubled since Mr. Carney took office promising to \u201cnegotiate a win\u201d by July 21st.
