Dustin Poirier has been retired from professional MMA<\/a> for less than three months, and he\u2019s already talking about a potential return to combat sports.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, Poirier revealed the one fighter that could prompt a comeback: Nate Diaz. Poirier didn\u2019t call for a UFC return, but he expressed an interest in boxing Diaz on a Zuffa Boxing card<\/a> and described the California native as the \u201cone that got away.\u201d<\/a> Poirier vs. Diaz nearly happened in the UFC as early as November 2018. Unfortunately, Diaz\u2019s failed contract negotiations with UFC canned that fight date, and in the years since,\u00a0the two have traded insults<\/a>\u00a0without a fight ever coming to fruition.<\/p>\n

Diaz responded to Poirier\u2019s boxing callout on Friday, not exactly accepting or turning down a showdown versus \u201cThe Diamond. \u201cI\u2019d beat ur ass but ur not aloud,\u201d Diaz wrote on X. \u201cPS ur checked out already.\u201d Diaz does have a point that he\u2019s a free agent, whereas Poirier is still beholden to his UFC contract even if he\u2019s officially walked away.<\/p>\n

Poirier answered back as well, making fun of Diaz\u2019s spelling and challenging the boxer to a spelling bee. The Louisiana native admitted an eighth grade educated and joked a spelling bee \u201cwould be the hardest fight of both of our careers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though Poirier\u2019s trash talk was fairly lighthearted, Diaz didn\u2019t seem to appreciate nor share the sentiment. Instead, he wrote back, \u201cYou had your chance u punked out. Get u some sleep ya old retired pu\u2014y.\u201d<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think we\u2019re any closer to seeing Poirier vs. Diaz in any setting than a week or a year ago.<\/p>\n

Dustin Poirier has remained active with broadcast work<\/a> and his charitable foundation since walking away from fighting. Diaz, meanwhile, is still an active prizefighter and has recently been trying to angle his way into the ring with boxing superstars like Canelo Alvarez.
