<\/p>\n (VERSION FRAN\u00c7AISE\u00a0SUIT)<\/p>\n MONTREAL \u2014 The McGill Martlets’ playoff hopes took a hit Friday night as they dropped a frustrating 1-0 decision to the UQAM Citadins in RSEQ women’s soccer action at Stade H\u00e9bert.<\/p>\n The loss was costly for McGill (2-3-4), which slipped two points below the post-season cutoff. With the win, UQAM (3-4-3) vaulted two points ahead of the Martlets for the fourth and final playoff berth in the eight-team Quebec conference.But McGill has five games remaining \u2014 one more than the Citadins.<\/p>\n McGill controlled much of the match but couldn’t convert. The Martlets were snake-bitten throughout, hitting the woodwork and seeing several close calls go against them.<\/p>\n UQAM scored the lone goal in the 76th minute on what appeared to be a hand-ball when Olivia Fouriezos redirected a corner from Sandrine Paiva off her body and into the right corner behind McGill goalkeeper Ann Stephanie Fortin<\/a>.<\/p>\n Martets forward Vanessa Kumar<\/a> struck the post in the first half, and in the 88th minute, a shot by reserve forward Estella Irvine<\/a> deflected off UQAM ‘keeper Ann-Sophie Guay during a wild goalmouth scramble and appeared to cross the line, but the referee waved it off.<\/p>\n “I don’t know what to tell you,” said a beleagured Jose-Luis Valdez, head coach of the Martlets. “With all the luck we had, the only way that I could describe it was that this was like a football player running the distance of the field\u00a0but fumbling the ball away on the goal-line, six times. That’s what it feels like. Our players are working hard, playing well, following a clear game plan and we had a half-dozen chances inside the six-yard box but we couldn’t push it across the goal line. It’s very frustrating.”<\/p>\n McGill outshot UQAM 10\u20136, including a 10\u20135 edge in shots on goal. The Martlets also held a 4\u20133 advantage in corner kicks and were whistled for the only foul of the match, along with the lone yellow card at the 78-minute mark.<\/p>\n Fortin made five saves in the McGill net, while Guay earned the shutout with 10 stops for UQAM.<\/p>\n McGill will look to turn its luck around when it hosts seventh-place Concordia (2-5-3) in a 3:30 p.m. matinee on Oct. 5 at Percival Molson Stadium. C’est tr\u00e8s frustrant. \u00bb<\/p>\n McGill a domin\u00e9 l’UQAM 10-6 au nombre de tirs, dont 10-5 au nombre de tirs cadr\u00e9s.
