{"id":18975,"date":"2025-07-23T21:56:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T21:56:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/18975\/"},"modified":"2025-07-23T21:56:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T21:56:13","slug":"calgary-parents-sentenced-to-6-years-in-prison-for-boys-scalding-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/18975\/","title":{"rendered":"Calgary parents sentenced to 6 years in prison for boy\u2019s scalding death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Calgary couple who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the scalding death of their toddler have each been sentenced to six years in prison.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753129028_943_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Justice Glen Poelman of Court of King\u2019s Bench said the couple displayed wanton disregard for the safety of 18-month-old <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/gabriel-sinclair-pasqua\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gabriel Sinclair-Pasqua<\/a>, who died in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Sonya Pasqua and Michael Sinclair both told court they\u2019re extremely sorry and heartbroken over the death. Both pleaded guilty last year to manslaughter.<\/p>\n<p>The 18-month-old died in October 2021 from an infection and head trauma. He had major burns to a third of his body and was emaciated.<\/p>\n<p>Court heard the the scalding was so severe that the boy should have received emergency medical care and immediate hospitalization, but the parents didn\u2019t seek help and tried to treat the burns with honey.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Sinclair was given roughly 3 1\/2 years credit for time already served in custody while Pasqua received about 1 1\/2 years credit.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutor Vicki Faulkner <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11183771\/calgary-couple-son-death-sentencing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told a sentencing hearing back in May that the couple saw their son as a paycheque<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At that time, the Crown was calling for an eight-year prison sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Court previously heard a text exchange between the parents that discussed how Gabriel needed to heal \u201ccause we still need him as a paycheque.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Judge deliberates sentence for parents of 18-month-old Gabirel Pasqua-Sinclair'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/vlcsnap-2025-05-16-18h18m16s975.png\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:58<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tJudge deliberates sentence for parents of 18-month-old Gabirel Pasqua-Sinclair\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was not a case of a spontaneous lashing out causing the death of Gabriel. This was not a case of parents who believed in alternative medicine and who loved and cared for the child,\u201d Faulkner told the hearing two months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey witnessed the pain he was in. day.<\/p>\n<p>Faulkner said the parents made the boy suffer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe harm and the pain of extreme burns to 33 per cent of his body for, at the very least, a week \u2013 how long he suffered was taken by Child and Family Services as a newborn, after his mother tested positive for cocaine, alcohol and marijuana, and he was placed in the care of a great-uncle and aunt in months before he died.<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 5, 2021, EMS were called to a home in the 2800 block of 14 Avenue S.E. for reports of an 18-month-old boy in medical distress.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below
