{"id":189831,"date":"2025-10-04T17:01:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-04T17:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/189831\/"},"modified":"2025-10-04T17:01:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-04T17:01:07","slug":"greg-norman-breaks-silence-on-exit-from-liv-golf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/189831\/","title":{"rendered":"Greg Norman Breaks Silence on Exit From LIV Golf"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_97zhg87kr\">In his first interview since leaving LIV Golf, Greg Norman reflected on the ups and downs of his tenure at the upstart circuit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_9hqum7nvb\">Norman, 70, was LIV\u2019s CEO when the tour launched in 2022 and held that position until the beginning of this year, when Scott O\u2019Neil assumed the role. Norman, though, stayed involved with the league <a class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_aoxits\" href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/golf\/greg-norman-announces-exit-from-liv-golf-hints-next-move\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">through the remainder of his contract<\/a>, which expired at the end of the 2025 season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_fumwbz1z9\"><a class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_aoxits\" href=\"https:\/\/www.australiangolfdigest.com.au\/dont-judge-me-greg-norman-breaks-silence-on-liv-golf-exit-in-exclusive-interview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Speaking to Australian Golf Digest<\/a>, the Aussie believes he accomplished his mission with the Saudi-backed circuit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Sign Up Now. Sports Illustrated\u2019s Free Golf Newsletters. dark<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_eqrdejjh7\">\u201cIt was just one of those things where you had to stay focused on what purpose you were going after and execute on that purpose,\u201d Norman said. \u201cI think, from my perspective, I did that. I knew there were going to be a lot of headwinds. I didn\u2019t anticipate the magnitude of those headwinds because\u2026 as time went by, those headwinds were created by misperceptions. (But) once <a class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_aoxits\" href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/golf\/2024\/01\/31\/pga-tour-signs-3-billion-deal-with-strategic-sports-group\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the [PGA Tour\u2019s] Strategic Sports Group (SSG) came in<\/a> and once the other private equity money started rolling in, that was the catalyst for everybody to calm down a little bit, in my opinion. They started to see that what LIV did\u2014bring private equity into the game of golf for the first time in 53 years\u2014was a positive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_g87uy124j\">As a result, the PGA Tour inflated its purses and cut field sizes for its signature events, giving its top players an opportunity to earn more money. Norman sees that as a victory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_f0lavxh0f\">\u201cWhen you look back on the past 12 months, there\u2019s been a realization that all those investment dollars have done great things for the institutions as well as the players, in all parts of the world,\u201d he said. \u201cEven with the PGA Tour [boosting its prize money with elevated events], I was quietly happy when I saw that, because the players benefited from it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_v0eimrkf8\">\u201cAre they going to recognise LIV for doing that? No, but I do know that was a significant uptick for them. For them to be able to play for more money, even play in less competitive fields\u2014they reduced the size of the fields\u2014I just said, \u2018Well, there you go.\u2019 The adoption, to some degree, of what we implemented has been accepted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_jrti4s4c8\">Although Norman, a two-time British Open champion, is pleased with his time with LIV, his three years there weren\u2019t easy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_920rkfds2\">\u201cI\u2019ll be honest with you, it was hard,\u201d Norman said. \u201cIt was very draining on me. I was working 100-hour weeks. I\u2019m not going to say all the abuse was anything [of consequence], but what hurt me the most was the lack of understanding of why people would judge me and give the abuse they did. That was the thing that bothered me the most, because I\u2019m the type of guy who will happily sit down and talk about things. And if I\u2019m wrong, I\u2019ll admit I\u2019m wrong. But don\u2019t judge me. Don\u2019t judge what LIV was truly all about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_762su678k\">Norman is now focusing on his golf course design business and being part of the organizing committee for the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_ucrugth8u\">And with LIV in his rearview, Norman has no regrets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagStyle_1mfvp8o-o_O-style_mxvz7o-o_O-style_12bse5w-o_O-style_6s3kpz\" data-mm-id=\"_o230n1zl4\">\u201cI\u2019d do it a little differently,\u201d he said, \u201cbut, yes, I\u2019d do it again in a heartbeat. Like anything, you look back at losing a golf tournament and ask yourself, Why did you lose that golf tournament? Did I hit a bad 5-iron? Or did I not concentrate? So, you sit back and you analyze it, and of course, you would do that. And, like any CEO, you have to learn by your successes just as much as by your failures.
