Nuno Esp\u00edrito Santo<\/a> has plenty to fix in his new role as manager of West Ham – but one of his primary aims must be to shore up\u00a0the Hammers’ set-piece frailties.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Appointed last weekend after the sacking of his predecessor Graham Potter<\/a>, Esp\u00edrito Santo oversaw a spirited 1-1 draw at Everton<\/a> on Monday night. Jarrod Bowen<\/a>‘s second-half equaliser earned the east Londoners a point after Michael Keane<\/a> had given the Toffees the lead from a recycled\u00a0corner\u00a0prior to the interval.<\/p>\n

Keane’s header from a whipped James Garner<\/a> cross was the eighth goal West Ham have conceded from set-piece situations\u00a0so far this season in the Premier League – the Hammers shipping twice as many goals from dead-balls (exc. penalties) as any other top flight team.<\/p>\n

Espirito Santo’s new charges travel to Arsenal this Saturday to face a Gunners side (7) who have, in contrast, scored the most Premier League goals from set-pieces this term.<\/p>\n

The Hammers’ Portuguese coach certainly has a challenge on his hands, but his record at Nottingham Forest<\/a> last season suggests he has the nous to address West Ham’s Achilles heel.<\/p>\n

Last season, under Esp\u00edrito Santo, Forest scored more goals (17) from corners, throw-ins and free-kicks than any team in the top tier, and they also ranked as one of the more defensively secure teams against dead-balls.<\/p>\n
