Canadian runner Nate Tucker\u00a0won his signature event in record-setting fashion at the\u00a0World Para Athletics Championships on Sunday\u00a0in New Delhi, India.<\/p>\n
The Victoria, B.C., native broke his own championship record\u00a0in the\u00a0men’s 1,500-metre T38 final\u00a0with a time of three minutes 57.98 seconds, earning his third world title in the event.<\/p>\n

The 2021 Paralympic champion saved his best for last, biding\u00a0his time near the front\u00a0before shifting gears to take the lead on the final lap. Tucker shaved\u00a03.9 seconds off his previous record from his gold-medal run\u00a0at his first world championships six years ago in Dubai.<\/p>\n
The 30-year-old Tucker, who previously went by the last name Riech, also won the 1,500-metre world title in 2023 in Paris before taking silver at the Paris Paralympics\u00a0in 2024.<\/p>\n

Tucker wasn’t the only Canadian to reach the podium on the final day of competition at the world championships, as fellow runner Marissa Papaconstantinou\u00a0and wheelchair racer\u00a0Austin Smeenk captured silver and bronze, respectively.<\/p>\n
Smeenk\u00a0finished third in the men’s\u00a0800-metre\u00a0T34 event earlier in the day at\u00a0Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.<\/p>\n
The 27-year-old from Oakville, Ont., crossed the finish line\u00a0in\u00a01:40.50 for his second bronze medal in New Delhi.<\/p>\n

Smeenk, the reigning Paralympic champion and world record holder in the event, finished just\u00a0behind China’s Wang Yang (1:40.24) and Thailand’s\u00a0Chaiwat Rattana\u00a0(1:40.37).<\/p>\n
Smeenk\u00a0also finished third in\u00a0the men’s 400-metre T34 final last Monday.<\/p>\n

Toronto’s Papaconstantinou\u00a0won her first career world silver medal in the final event of the day.<\/p>\n
The 25-year-old\u00a0finished second in the the women’s 200-metre\u00a0T64 final with a time of\u00a027.07\u00a0\u2014 0.9 seconds behind Marlene van Gansewinkel of the Netherlands. American\u00a0Sydney Barta\u00a0took bronze in\u00a027.51.<\/p>\n

It’s Papaconstantinou’s second medal of the week after winning bronze in the\u00a0100-metre T64.<\/p>\n
