{"id":191975,"date":"2025-10-05T21:27:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-05T21:27:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/191975\/"},"modified":"2025-10-05T21:27:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-05T21:27:06","slug":"coffee-prices-rise-amid-international-trade-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/191975\/","title":{"rendered":"Coffee prices rise amid international trade war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Canada\u2019s iconic coffee chain is charging more for the drink, reflecting a wider trend of jittery coffee prices. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In a statement to CTV News, a Tim Hortons spokesperson said the restaurant chain is raising coffee prices for the first time in three years, suggesting that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/en\/thought-leadership\/economics\/featured-insights\/rbc-inflation-watch\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/en\/thought-leadership\/economics\/featured-insights\/rbc-inflation-watch\/\">compared to inflation<\/a>, the price increase of 1.5 per cent per cup was \u201cmore than reasonable.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The price of coffee beans has more than doubled, Tim Hortons said. According to <a href=\"\" rel=\"\" title=\"\">MarketWatch.com<\/a>, the price jumped from C$2.21 to C$5.45 per pound over the last three years. The coffee chain said that the price hike would boil out to \u201can average of three cents per cup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Outside of drive-thrus, Canadians paid 27.9 per cent more for their coffee at grocery stores in August compared to the same time last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statcan.gc.ca\/o1\/en\/plus\/8518-its-costing-you-latte-more-cup-coffee-lately-and-heres-why\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.statcan.gc.ca\/o1\/en\/plus\/8518-its-costing-you-latte-more-cup-coffee-lately-and-heres-why\">StatCan<\/a> reported last month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statcan.gc.ca\/o1\/en\/plus\/8518-its-costing-you-latte-more-cup-coffee-lately-and-heres-why\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.statcan.gc.ca\/o1\/en\/plus\/8518-its-costing-you-latte-more-cup-coffee-lately-and-heres-why\">Canada imports<\/a> nearly a quarter of its coffee from Colombia, with Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Central American countries making up the rest. The coffee trade was valued at more than $1.3 billion in July, importing 131 million kilograms of unroasted coffee. <\/p>\n<p>U.S. tariffs affect your cup of joe<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Although most of Canada\u2019s unroasted coffee comes from Mexico and further south, roasted coffee largely comes from the United States, according to StatCan. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Canada imported 3.9 million kilograms of roasted coffee, mostly from the U.S. in July 2025. Roasted coffee was among the products affected by U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs on Brazil and then were part of Canada\u2019s retaliatory tariffs on the U.S., StatCan reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The statistics agency said that the counter-tariff measures were \u201cpossibly affecting costs for some Canadian coffee importers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Food prices rising especially fast<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Food prices rose 3.5 per cent in August, <a href=\"https:\/\/dis-prod.assetful.loblaw.ca\/content\/dam\/loblaw-companies-limited\/creative-assets\/loblaw-ca\/releases-and-statements\/Food_Inflation_Report_September.pdf\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/dis-prod.assetful.loblaw.ca\/content\/dam\/loblaw-companies-limited\/creative-assets\/loblaw-ca\/releases-and-statements\/Food_Inflation_Report_September.pdf\">Loblaw<\/a> reported in their September food inflation report. It found that food prices are rising faster than the Consumer Price Index, which only bumped up 1.9 per cent that month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Loblaw claims that counter-tariffs were raising prices for Canadians, but since Sept 1, when most were dropped, products are back to \u201cflowing through\u201d to customers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Loblaw also highlighted coffee in their report, saying \u201ccoffee prices have climbed back near their 2025 highs,\u201d blaming the 50 per cent U.S. tariffs on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fas.usda.gov\/data\/production\/commodity\/0711100\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.fas.usda.gov\/data\/production\/commodity\/0711100\">Brazil<\/a>, the largest coffee exporter in the world. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Loblaw suggested that buyers have to \u201ccompete\u201d for alternative suppliers while Brazilian coffee growers are \u201cholding on to their beans,\u201d and being cautious with their sales.
