The most iconic glam rock band\u2019s lead singer, Paul Stanley of Kiss<\/a>, was an image of sex in the 1970s.<\/p>\n Delivery was everything, and the breathy intensity of \u2018I Was Made for Lovin\u2019 You\u2019, underpinned by that muscular guitar riff, still goes down a treat, if a little cheesy. The androgyny of his on-stage star-eyed look framed with long hair cemented him as a legend; bolstered by on-stage flirting with sultry utterances like, \u201cYou lick me, I lick you\u201d,\u00a0his own lyricism and language leans on the direct.<\/p>\n What\u2019s surprising is that their most popular song, \u2018I Was Made for Lovin\u2019 You\u2019, was inspired by a Motown hit, \u2018Standing in the Shadows of Love\u2019, the ascending chorus tune follows the same pattern. Stanley explained he\u2019s heavily fallen in love again and again with soul and Motown music to Songfacts, \u201cYou wind up with other people copying \u2018I Was Made for Lovin\u2019 You\u2019, but \u2018I Was Made for Lovin\u2019 You\u2019 was rooted in that [\u2018Standing in the Shadows of Love\u2019] melody line.\u201d <\/p>\n In fact, before he got into shock rock, soul was always his staple. \u201dI can go on and on. I was a kid who was lucky enough to see Solomon Burke, Otis Redding \u2013 that music is fundamental in the foundation of what I do and what I am. It has to be in my music, because I heard it and loved it,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n But beyond the melodies, it was the lyrical hooks that caught his attention the most. He opines that some of the greatest lyrics in history hailed from Motown. The best opening line for the artist is from the Spinners\u2019 song \u2018I\u2019ll Be Around\u2019, despite the fact that Stanley preferred to cover \u2018Could It Be I\u2019m Falling In Love\u2019 for his 2021 release as Paul Stanley\u2019s Soul Station. <\/p>\n The artist shared, \u201cThere\u2019s so many great Spinners songs. \u2018I\u2019ll Be Around\u2019 is a great, great song. I love songs where the first line just pulls you in. In essence, you\u2019re saying, \u2018Tell me more! Tell me more! Tell me the story!\u2018 And a lot of those songs have that quality, like \u2018I\u2019ll Be Around\u2019 by the Spinners: \u2018This is our fork in the road.\u2018 I heard that, and I was like, \u2018What do you mean? What\u2019s going on?\u2018\u201c <\/p>\n He even pointed out a couple of others that he had clearly committed to memory. \u201cOr the Stylistics\u2019 \u2018Today I Saw Somebody Who Looked Just Like You\u2018.\u201c That opening line is off \u2018You Are Everything\u2019, which Stanley did cover. He went on, that the first line of a song is \u201cthe first page of a story, and after that, you want to read it. So, \u2018Could It Be I\u2019m Falling In Love\u2019 as opposed to \u2018I\u2019ll Be Around\u2019, it was more upbeat, positive, celebratory, and it just seemed like a great song to play live.\u201d<\/p>\n Another favourite motif of soul music for Stanley is call and response, recycled in \u2018Shout It Out Loud\u2019 for Kiss, too. He revealed, \u201cYou have the verse, \u2018Well the night\u2019s begun and you want some fun, do you think you\u2019re gonna find it, think you\u2019re gonna find it\u2018. That answer in the background is the Four Tops<\/a>! The call-and-response is something that the Four Tops did in \u2018Sugar Pie Honey Bunch\u2019 \u2013 there are loads of those.\u201d<\/p>\n What drew the Kiss lead singer to the soul tracks he covered in\u00a0Now and Then\u00a0are \u201csongs and singers who didn\u2019t have to flex their muscles to show masculinity\u201d. That \u2018Shout It Out Loud\u2019 lyric displays this early admiration for a different type of man who specifically seems to put the woman or person looking for \u201csome fun\u201d into the active and deciding position as they look to \u201cfind it\u201d rather than wait. <\/p>\n
