{"id":193758,"date":"2025-10-06T20:15:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T20:15:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/193758\/"},"modified":"2025-10-06T20:15:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T20:15:07","slug":"garmin-hit-with-a-second-lawsuit-in-a-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/193758\/","title":{"rendered":"Garmin hit with a second lawsuit in a week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Garmin\u2019s legal troubles are piling up.\u00a0Less than a week after <a href=\"https:\/\/runningmagazine.ca\/the-scene\/strava-explains-why-they-are-suing-gps-powerhouse-garmin\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strava filed a patent infringement suit against the company<\/a>, it was revealed that Finnish smartwatch brand Suunto is also taking the GPS giant to court.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/news\/suunto-sues-garmin-over-patent-infringements\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BikeRadar<\/a>, the lawsuit, filed in a Texas federal court on Sept. 22, accuses Garmin of infringing on five design patents covering technologies related to respiratory rate measurement, automatic golf swing detection and tracking, antenna construction and watch casing. Suunto claims these features appear in nearly all of Garmin\u2019s watches\u2013including the Forerunner, Fenix, Epix, MARQ, Instinct and Venu series\u2013as well as the Approach golf watches and various accessory sensors.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-127747 size-full lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/SuuntoCourtney-Suunto.png\" alt=\"Suunto Courtney Dauwalter\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\"  data- style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/450;\"\/>Photo: Suunto<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/garminrumors.com\/suunto-v-garmin-finnish-watchmaker-alleges-patent-infringement-across-many-garmin-models\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reports<\/a> suggest some of these patents are nearing expiration, meaning the timing of the lawsuit could protect Suunto and\/or secure financial benefits even after the patents expire.<\/p>\n<p>Suunto is seeking damages and an injunction that could block sales of Garmin devices using the patented technologies. Garmin has not yet responded publicly to the allegations.<\/p>\n<p>The Strava lawsuit<\/p>\n<p>Strava filed its own lawsuit against Garmin on Sept. 30 in Colorado federal court, accusing the company of infringing on decade-old patents tied to segments and heat maps. The complaint also alleges Garmin violated a 2015 Master Cooperation Agreement, which brought Strava\u2019s live segments to Garmin devices.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-139095 size-large lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Garmin-970-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Garmin Forerunner 970\" width=\"788\" height=\"591\"  data- style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 788px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 788\/591;\"\/>Garmin Forerunner 970 Photo: Garmin<\/p>\n<p>As with Suunto\u2019s case, Garmin declined to comment (beyond a standard statement saying the company does not discuss pending litigation).
