But did it help cinemas?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-19e7b5\" class=\"body-graf\">In one scene in her new film, \u201cThe Official Release Party of a Showgirl,\u201d Taylor Swift, seated in a director\u2019s chair, looks into the camera and declares, \u201cIn my industry, attention is affection.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9c1b4a\" class=\"body-graf\">Swift is explaining the inspiration for her song \u201cActually Romantic,\u201d which fans have widely speculated is about her strained relationship with Charlie XCX. But Swift\u2019s comment is also a distillation of her business philosophy, which played out in spectacular fashion at movie theaters over the weekend. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1adeba\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe Official Release Party of a Showgirl,\u201d a theatrical, three-day-only event that correlated with the sale date of her new album, pulled in over $50 million globally, according to its distributor, AMC Theatres. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a02063\" class=\"body-graf\">The movie, which Swift wrote and directed, is not a traditional piece of cinema: It consists of behind-the-scenes footage of her making the music video for \u201cThe Fate of Ophelia\u201d and brief interviews and lyric videos of the other songs on the album.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/tdy-taylor-swift-life-of-a-showgirl--9hb9pm.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5db7ed\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIt really is a 90-minute infomercial for Taylor Swift\u2019s new album,\u201d said Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Comscore. \u201cIt\u2019s a brilliantly disguised marketing tool to sell more streams of her albums, and fans loved it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-01a8a8\" class=\"body-graf\">While narratively slight, Swift\u2019s \u201cRelease Party\u201d seemed to more than satisfy its audiences, who gave it an A+ Cinemascore. Swift broke multiple box office rules with the release \u2014 she had no trailer and no Thursday preview showtimes, and she announced the film just two weeks before it hit theaters, eschewing the monthslong marketing campaign of a traditional film. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-353ca6\" class=\"body-graf\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/taylorswift13\/status\/1969072116046938144\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">her Sept. 19 social media post announcing the theatrical event<\/a>, Swift invited fans to what she described as a \u201c*dazzling* soir\u00e9e,\u201d adding, \u201cDancing is optional but very much encouraged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5fede5\" class=\"body-graf\">The release was \u201cnothing less than a triumph,\u201d AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron said in a statement. \u201cIt was simply a wonderful gift to her passionate and enthusiastic fans, who got to see, on our giant screens, behind-the-scenes footage and insight into \u2018The Life of a Showgirl.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b71346\" class=\"body-graf\">Swifities showed up in the masses at theaters around the world, some sporting the friendship bracelets that have become associated with Swift\u2019s brand and others wearing orange to usher in the new \u201cshowgirl\u201d era.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e32c9c\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cthis experience was the closest thing to eras tour magic I\u2019ve felt since 2023,\u201d wrote one Swiftie in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@chloegracee1204\/video\/7557172857260739853?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7529981280352863799\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TikTok video documenting<\/a> the experience at the theater. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a8590d\" class=\"body-graf\">Some theaters also shared their enthusiasm over the film experience \u2014 and the reaction from their consumers \u2014 in social media promotions. Lido Cinemas, which has eight cinemas and a rooftop venue in Hawthorn, Australia, posted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@lidocinemas\/video\/7555388818505944341?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7529981280352863799\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">video of several of its employees<\/a> \u201cwarming up for the Swifties.\u201d Picturehouse, a cinema-chain in the U.K., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@picturehouses\/video\/7555885233720020246?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7529981280352863799\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">shared a video<\/a> of three people dressed in typical \u201cshowgirl\u201d attire (sparkly jumpsuits and feathered headpieces), writing: \u201cus at the cinema this weekend.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-066d57\" class=\"body-graf\">Swift\u2019s success may have come at the cost of some studios, however, who spent millions marketing their buzzy Oscar contenders, only to have a promotional film take over the box office. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-64d131\" class=\"body-graf\">The behind-the-scenes featurette got more people into movie theaters than \u201cSmashing Machine,\u201d the Dwyane Johnson Oscar vehicle from A24, or the second weekend of Warner Bros.\u2019 critically touted Leonardo DiCaprio action movie \u201cOne Battle After Another.\u201d It also beat Disney\u2019s re-release of James Cameron\u2019s \u201cAvatar Way of the Water,\u201d and it lured little girls away from the second weekend of Universal\u2019s \u201cGaby\u2019s Dollhouse: The Movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-045790\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cRelease Party\u201d claimed many of the premium large format screens, like IMAX and Dolby, which attract hard-core cinephiles and drive theatrical release earnings. And while its audience was 80% female, it still peeled off some Swiftie dads, who may have been interested in seeing The Rock&#8217;s sports drama.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-445c61\" class=\"body-graf\">Even some executives at the studios that Swift beat see the success of \u201cThe Official Release Party of a Showgirl\u201d as a net positive for their business. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-af30b4\" class=\"body-graf\">In an era when top movie stars struggle to lure audiences off the couch, Swift reliably delivers her fans to theaters.
