The Surrey Police Service (SPS) warns the public to avoid the area around King George Boulevard and 107A Avenue due to an ongoing police incident.<\/p>\n
The SPS says it is investigating reports of shots being fired in the area, starting at around 3:13 p.m. on Monday.<\/p>\n
A man was reported to have fired gunshots near the Gateway Skytrain Station at University Drive and 108 Avenue.<\/p>\n
The man had fled this area before officers arrived.<\/p>\n
Only a few minutes later, the man was located, firing additional gunshots, in front of the SPS\u2019s District 1 Community Police Office.<\/p>\n
Eventually, officers were able to safely take the man into custody with the support of additional police forces that arrived at the scene.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe suspect is contained by SPS officers and the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team (IERT),\u201d said Media Relations Officer Sgt. Lindsey Houghton in a statement.<\/p>\n
After he was detained, images show the suspect was put on a wheeled\u00a0stretcher, receiving medical attention from BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS).<\/p>\n
There are no reports of other injuries at this time.<\/p>\n
The SPS says that King George Boulevard and 107A Avenue remain closed for vehicles and pedestrians throughout the rest of the evening in both directions.<\/p>\n
Additionally, the SPS has confirmed that the RCMP\u2019s Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) was also at the scene, investigating a suspicious bag that was left behind inside the police office.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe bag was checked and determined not to contain anything suspicious,\u201d police say.<\/p>\n
Officers are remaining on scene while the investigation continues. <\/p>\n
The SPS is also asking the public to reach out to police if anyone has witnessed the shots being fired or the actions of the suspect.<\/p>\n
