Before Macon Blair\u2019s The Toxic Avenger released in theaters back in August, the Cineverse marketing team came up with a wonderful idea. They took the remainder of their marketing budget for the film and donated it to the non-profit\u00a0Undue Medical Debt<\/a>, using that money to literally clear $5 million in real-life medical debt for those who need the help the most.<\/p>\n

But wait\u2026 how the hell does that work?!<\/p>\n

The non-profit leverages donations to purchase qualifying medical debt (for individuals four times or below the federal poverty level or who have medical debt that is 5% or more of annual income) in bulk from providers like hospitals and also collection agencies for pennies on the dollar meaning one dollar donated, on average, erases $100 of un-payable medical debt. Recipients of debt relief then receive an Undue branded envelope in the mail out of the blue with the good news: some or all of their medical debt has been erased!<\/p>\n

Cineverse relieved $5 million in medical debt right off the bat with our donation, and we also vowed that for every million bucks the movie made at the box office, another million dollars in debt would go up in toxic smoke. Now that the toxic smoke has settled, we can announce that the initiative was far more successful than any of us ever imagined.<\/p>\n

What started as a quest to eliminate $5 million has TRIPLED, thanks to the generosity and passion of The Toxic Avenger fans across the country. Together, you didn\u2019t just meet that goal, you crushed it, helping wipe out over $15 million in medical debt for 10,000+ people!<\/p>\n

But the work isn\u2019t done! For every family who can breathe easier tonight, there are still countless others waiting for help to arrive. If fans and everyday citizens don\u2019t step up, who will?
