It\u2019s almost like a little T-Rex walking along,\u201d says wildlife photographer and safari guide Tristan Dicks, who\u2019s based in South Africa. \u201cYou feel like there\u2019s this link to a time gone by.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgay0jfb000m3j6o6jdw3h7j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Pangolins have been around for 80 million years \u2014 humans just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1126\/science.aao6266\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">350,000<\/a>. But their future is uncertain. Found across Asia and Africa, all eight of the existing pangolin species are listed as threatened to various degrees by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgaxt4u300003j6o7epdm9xt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dicks\u2019 photo of a Temmink\u2019s pangolin is featured on the cover of \u201c10 years of Remembering Wildlife,\u201d the latest in a series of photo books from the <a href=\"https:\/\/rememberingwildlife.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Remembering Wildlife<\/a> project, which donates its profits to conservation efforts.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/jpeg-temminck-s-pangolin-photo-tristan-dicks-remembering-wildlife.jpg\" alt=\"Tristan Dicks\u2019 photo of a Temminck\u2019s pangolin, taken in South Africa, was the cover for the book. In this year\u2019s edition, the pangolin takes center stage.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgay2ns2000u3j6ot9yen761@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Pangolins are the world\u2019s most illegally trafficked mammal, with poaching driven by demand for their meat and keratin scales, which are used predominantly in scientifically unproven traditional medicine.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgay2ns2000v3j6ohtvicsvu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dr. Wendy Panaino, an ecologist who wrote a section dedicated to pangolins in the book, explains that \u201cwhat makes them particularly vulnerable to poaching is their slow-moving behavior. They do not run away, making them easy to grab by humans.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgay2ns2000w3j6oagj9je4p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11751142\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">136,000<\/a> pangolins were illegally traded between 2010-2023, in almost 400 smuggling cases. China is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/17663\/number-of-illegal-pangolins-seized-by-origin-and-destination-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">biggest market<\/a> for illegally trafficked pangolins. While recent changes in Chinese law and enforcement around the use of pangolin scales have seen a slight <a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifejustice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/disruption-and-disarray-report-executive-summary-pages-v02.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reduction in poaching<\/a>, the trade remains rampant.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgay2ns2000x3j6oc7p52p34@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Exact trafficking numbers are difficult to estimate but Raggett says that at the rate poaching is estimated to be happening, 1 million pangolins will have been captured in the 10 years she has been running the Remembering Wildlife series.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgay2ns2000y3j6opekc9p0w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen I realized that, I did feel truly terrible. So, I actually apologize to the pangolins for not getting around to them until now,\u201d Raggett says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgay2ns2000z3j6odff9bmqq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Poaching is not the only human-made challenge pangolins face.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgay2ns200103j6ofm9hqv5h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn southern Africa, electrified fences are a huge threat to pangolins, given their defensive habit of curling into a ball when threatened,\u201d says Dr. Panaino. \u201cThey walk on their hind legs, [so] the electrics make contact often with the belly, and then they curl into a ball and get constantly electrocuted.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/african-leopard-photo-margot-raggett-remembering-wildlife.jpg\" alt=\"The new book, celebrating 10 years of the series,&lt;strong&gt; &lt;\/strong&gt;includes highlights from previous editions, like this shot by Remembering Wildlife founder Margot Raggett of two African leopards on the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"5025\" width=\"7677\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgay2ns200113j6o00giekqn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Relatively little is known about pangolins because they are so rarely seen in the wild.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgay2ns200123j6ouzh9amgk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe don\u2019t even know how many pangolins there are,\u201d says Raggett. \u201cOne of the reasons I hesitated on pangolins is [that] they\u2019re so hard to get decent photographs of in the wild, because they\u2019re incredibly secretive and nocturnal.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgay2ns200133j6o97wj7mmq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Consequently, for the first time in the Remembering Wildlife series, the project bent its usual wild-only rules to allow photos of pangolins released back into the wild and pangolins in sanctuaries.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgay2ns200143j6okd0xsm66@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dicks captured his image of a pangolin at night in Sabi Sands, a private game reserve adjacent to South Africa\u2019s Kruger National Park. \u201cIn 17 years of guiding, I\u2019ve only seen 15 of them,\u201d he says. \u201cIt just kind of always felt like a photograph of a pangolin was out of reach.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgay2ns200153j6o7ypsm61q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI was just lucky\u2026 with that particular image, that that pangolin happened to come out of a burrow and cross the road as we were coming along.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgay2ns200163j6onb4829uv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A <a href=\"https:\/\/iucn.org\/press-release\/202508\/lack-data-and-reporting-gaps-hamper-global-efforts-protect-pangolins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recent IUCN report<\/a> found that a lack of data and reporting gaps are hampering efforts to protect the animal. Both Raggett and Dicks hope that the photo book will raise awareness of pangolins and support conservation efforts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgay2ns200173j6o0bsdvcfg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cA lot of people that come on safari for the first time have never heard of a pangolin,\u201d says Dicks. \u201cSo, if we can create photographs that people can connect with, that makes a huge difference.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgay2ns200183j6ojutpdai5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Raggett agrees. \u201cPeople have got to love something to want to protect it and to fear losing it,\u201d she says. \u201cPeople have said to me, \u2018I\u2019ve never even heard of [pangolins] until you said you were doing a book on them,\u2019 and in a way\u2026 that\u2019s good.
