\n\tThis week, BLACKPINK\u2019s \u201cJump\u201d debuted at No. 1<\/a> on Billboard\u2019s Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts \u2014 making it, statistically, the biggest song in the world.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut the K-pop superstars almost didn\u2019t get the chance to record it, with the song reaching the group after a circuitous journey that started when it was originally written by, and for, Major Lazer.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThen we didn\u2019t release it,\u201d says Major Lazer\u2019s de facto leader Diplo<\/a>. \u201cAnd thank God.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe origins of \u201cJump\u201d go back to January 2024, when it came into being during a writing session at Sony Studios in Miami with Diplo, Major Lazer\u2019s Ape Drums and Argentine producer Zecca, who\u2019s worked extensively with Bzrp, including on his 2023 juggernaut \u201cShakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. #53.\u201d While they were in the session to write Latin music, Diplo also wanted to make a song in the vein of early-\u201900s electroclash heroes Fischerspooner<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c[I thought] it\u2019d be like an \u2018Emerge\u2019 kind of acid song, and Major Lazer would do it, and I\u2019d put a vocal on it, and it\u2019d be fun and happy and we\u2019d find a way to make it work\u201d he says. But via Diplo, the song then landed with Argentinian duo Ca7riel and Paco Amoroso<\/a>, who worked with Diplo on arranging it, then recorded it.<\/p>\n

\n\tThen still relatively unknown in the U.S., the pair blew up not long after working on the song, a rise in part fueled by their October 2024 Tiny Desk Concert, which now has<\/a> 39 million views. \u201cThe show they did for NPR went viral, and they had a sound that\u2019s kind of jazz, Latin and Moroccan, so then the song [we did] didn\u2019t make sense for them,\u201d Diplo says.<\/p>\n

\n\tBy this point, the song was already a year old, but Diplo would not be thwarted. \u201cI was courting a lot of people and just kept writing,\u201d he says. \u201cI was like, \u2018I\u2019m going to make this f\u2013king idea work. I\u2019m going to take this to the finish line, no matter how hard it is.\u201d He was still contemplating releasing it as a Major Lazer song, calling the group an outlet where \u201cif my crazy music doesn\u2019t find a home, it\u2019s going to be released on a Major Lazer album.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut kismet interceded when Diplo found himself in the studio with Teddy Park, who\u2019s written dozens of hits for K-Pop acts including 2NE1 and BigBang, and who is the creative director and lead producer for BLACKPINK. \u201cI played him a bunch of stuff that I thought was interesting,\u201d recalls Diplo, \u201cHe was like, \u2018Cool.\u2019 Then I was about to leave and I pulled this song up. I was like, \u2018This is probably the craziest thing I have that could maybe work.\u2019 He was like, \u2018That\u2019s the perfect idea. This is what we need to do \u2014 something this radical.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe song is kind of a weird one, swerving through moments of techno, drill, hardstyle, Eurodance and trance with a chorus melody that evokes the 1997 rave anthem \u201cMeet Her at the Loveparade\u201d by German producer Da Hool. It\u2019s also a song that might not necessarily catch your attention from the start (if you\u2019re not already a BLACKPINK fan, that is), but makes so many inventive shifts that it ultimately demands your attention. Drawing from myriad dance<\/a>\/electronic subgenres, it\u2019s also essentially a club track \u2014 and Diplo\u2019s latest venture in juicing up mainstream pop with electronic sounds not widely known in the mainstream.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI would say it\u2019s speed, garage and trance, and the bass line of the drops is almost like Goa trance,\u201d says Diplo. \u201cIt goes into drill and Jersey Club. The fill is from a Brazilian genre called from Bahia. The outro is like hard techno, and the beginning drums are more Euro-pop from the \u201990s, with the guitar line and the whistle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHaving worked with some of the biggest pop acts in the world, he says with authority that such hybridizing would be swiftly rejected by most major artists. But with a predilection for risk taking among K-pop generally and BLACKPINK specifically \u2014 along with a famously devoted fanbase that celebrates and elevates most anything the group does \u2014 the song had finally landed with the right act.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf I said to like, Adele, that \u2018Hey I\u2019ve got this trance\/Jersey Club song\u2026 That\u2019s already off limits for somebody like that,\u201d says Diplo. \u201cThis was so fun because they\u2019re like, \u2018We just want to do something that shocks people, and we don\u2019t care if it\u2019s different.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDiplo passed the track to Park and BLACKPINK in May, and they released the song and its high-concept video on July 11, with \u201cJump\u201d being the group\u2019s first new single<\/a> in three years. He briefly connected with BLACKPINK\u2019s JENNIE (whose 2025 album single \u201clike JENNIE\u201d he co-wrote and co-produced) while the group was recording the song when she FaceTimed him one night while he was in Bulgaria (\u201cor some place like that,\u201d he says), but the connection was bad, so ultimately he didn\u2019t hear the song again until the group finished cutting it, sent him the files and he did the finishing touches.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn its final form, the song now has writing credits from Diplo, Ape Drums, Zecca, TEDDY, South Korean producer and frequent BLACKPINK collaborator 24, Swedish artist Zikai, British singer\/songwriter Claudia Valentina, German producer Jumpa, vocalist\/writer\/producer Malachiii (widely known for his vocals on his Adam Port and Strv collab \u201cMove\u201d) and singer\/songwriter Jesse Bluu. Its production credits go to 24, TEDDY and Diplo.<\/p>\n

\n\tIf there was any sort of grand plan in all of this, it\u2019s that Diplo says he intentionally stepped back from touring as heavily this year in order to re-focus on writing and producing music, finding that the house scene he\u2019s been heavily DJing in for years has, for him, gone stale.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHouse music is a genre that\u2019s on a loop that just became a contest of bottles and tables and cover songs,\u201d he says. \u201cThe main part of the house music industry is to make this sound and situation as comfortable as possible for older, rich people to kind of enjoy a dip into underground culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHaving occasionally revamped the sound of pop music over the years \u2014 pulling Justin Bieber<\/a>\u2018s career off life support with \u201cWhere Are \u00dc Now,\u201d the 2015 collab with the singer and Skrillex<\/a> (as part of the producers\u2019 Jack \u00dc project), injecting Major Lazer\u2019s woozy dancehall into worldwide earholes by giving it to Beyonc\u00e9<\/a> as a sample for 2011\u2019s \u201cRun the World (Girls),\u201d putting house into the pop realm with the 2018 Dua Lipa<\/a> collab \u201cElectricity\u201d via his and Mark Ronson\u2019s Silk City<\/a> project \u2014 he was motivated to just try and do that again.<\/p>\n

\n\tWith \u201cJump\u201d now dominating charts and streamers, he now seems convinced of his efficacy. \u201cI feel like \u2018Jump\u2019 sounds like a song from 2026 or something,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s 2025, but if you look at the charts, every song sounds like a rehashed version of like, an A&R\u2019s dream of what\u2019s interesting.Music should go back to \u2018Let\u2019s shock people.\u2019 I think this song does that, and that\u2019s why it\u2019s gotten a reaction like it has.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThough \u201cJump\u201d ventures across multiple styles in its two-minute, 45 second duration, the most in-vogue moments are the chorus and outro. Thumping techno drums roll in alongside the stabbing synth lead, which nods to the fashionable sound of the decade\u2019s preferred flavor of techno, currently spearheaded by the likes of Charlotte de Witte<\/a> and Sara Landry<\/a>. These producers, and more in their realm of the scene, are pulling in entire festival crowds with this sound \u2014 BLACKPINK could be therefore reaching new audiences with \u201cJump,\u201d while bringing new audiences to techno.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMy sole goal as a producer is to destroy all genres,\u201d Diplo concludes. \u201cJust to kill them all and mix everything that people don\u2019t allow, or push the limits and do genres I shouldn\u2019t be allowed to do. That\u2019s been my whole M.O. since I started music, being the enemy for journalists and even audiences who are confused all the time by what I release.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBut that\u2019s what K-pop is. If you listen to some old BLACKPINK, old BTS or ATEEZ, they\u2019re going to put six genres in a song.
