Trotwood Mayor Yvette Page said city council specifically opposes use of the Hara Arena site for a behavioral health center.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe respect and understand the importance of expanding mental health services in Ohio,\u201d Page said in a press release on Tuesday. \u201cHowever, placing a forensic facility at the former Hara Arena site does not align with our vision for economic revitalization, job creation, and quality of life improvements for Trotwood residents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Page stressed the city is open to determining an \u201calternative location\u201d within Trotwood for the project.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not saying \u2018no\u2019 to the facility,\u201d Page said. \u201cWe are saying, \u2018Let\u2019s find a better place that works for everyone.\u2019 We are ready to be a part of that solution.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Harrison Twp. trustees said the project would be \u201ctransformational\u201d for the entire Dayton region.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we respect our (Trotwood) neighbors, we don\u2019t share the same opinion on the project,\u201d said township spokesman Nathan Edwards. \u201cWe view this opportunity, specifically at the Hara Arena site \u2014 a site that was hit by the 2019 Memorial Day tornadoes \u2014 as an opportunity for for a phoenix-rising-from-the-ashes type of moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Edwards said the project could generate around 500 new jobs and $126 million in payroll, along with the initial $300 million investment.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth communities have had our concerns with economic development, especially after the tornadoes,\u201d Edwards said. \u201cA site as huge as this one is hard to activate and if we can attract a major investment, specifically from a reliable organization like the state of Ohio, we\u2019re all for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Edwards also pushed back on Trotwood\u2019s description of the proposed treatment center, which was labeled as a \u201cforensic\u201d health care facility in the city\u2019s press release, calling that designation \u201cmisleading.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been advised that it would be a behavioral health center that specializes in state of the art mental health rehabilitation of all kinds, not just for those who are incarcerated,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

A representative for the Ohio Department of Behavioral Health did not respond to a request for clarification or comment on the proposed project.<\/p>\n

The property\u2019s current owner Michael Heitz first said in May<\/a> his real estate agent was approached by state representatives about the site\u2019s potential, but noted sale of the property was \u201cfar from imminent\u201d at the time.<\/p>\n

The Ohio Controlling Board, which would need to approve the state\u2019s purchase of the site prior to the start of any construction, will meet on Oct. 20.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Around 42 acres of the site fall within Harrison Twp., and the rest within Trotwood city limits.
