A 51-year-old man has died after an “unprovoked attack” in Richmond Hill on Wednesday and a suspect has been arrested, York Regional Police say.<\/p>\n
The attack happened outside on Lorraine Street, near Yonge Street and Elgin Mills Road E., according to Duty Insp. Ken Golding, spokesperson for York Regional Police.<\/p>\n
Police were called to the area shortly before 5 p.m. for a report of an assault.<\/p>\n
When officers arrived, they found the man with serious injuries. York Regional Paramedics took him in life-threatening condition to hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.<\/p>\n
Golding said police do not yet know where the victim lived. His name has not been released and police still have to notify next of kin.<\/p>\n
Attack ‘was between 2 strangers,’ police say<\/p>\n
The suspect was arrested nearby. Golding said police are not looking for any additional suspects. The person’s name has not been released and there’s no word on charges.<\/p>\n
“At this time, it appears that the attack was unprovoked and it was between two strangers,” Golding told reporters near the scene.<\/p>\n
Golding said there is no risk to the public, but residents should expect a large police presence in the area. The homicide unit is investigating and forensic identification services are on the scene, he said.<\/p>\n
Officers were in the area on Wednesday night, seeking witnesses and looking for surveillance camera and dashboard camera video, he added.<\/p>\n
