Dale Earnhardt Jr.<\/a> has never been shy about sharing what\u2019s on his mind when it comes to NASCAR<\/a>. This week, he opened up about a growing issue that\u2019s starting to hit fans, media, and even drivers alike \u2014 playoff fatigue.<\/p>\n

During the most recent episode of\u00a0The Dale Jr. Download<\/a>, the NASCAR Hall of Famer reflected on how the ongoing debate surrounding the playoff format versus full-season points and what-not has started to overshadow the actual racing. <\/p>\n

While the battles on track remain compelling, Earnhardt Jr. believes<\/a> that endless speculation about future format changes has sucked the energy out of what should be the sport\u2019s most exciting stretch of the entire season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know that I\u2019m getting some fatigue \u2014 and I think a lot of people are \u2014 around this whole conversation about the playoffs versus full-season points,\u201d Earnhardt Jr. admitted<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t think people are fatigued with what\u2019s actually happening on the racetrack right now, but I do think they\u2019re tired of the\u00a0conversation\u00a0around what we\u2019re going to end up having. And honestly, I think I am too \u2014 a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earnhardt Jr. explained<\/a> that the discussion around potential playoff changes has created a distraction at the worst possible time \u2014 during the postseason itself. Another caveat is the fact that NASCAR\u2019s competition committee has been careful not to announce any new format decisions before the current season concludes, with the idea that it would diminish the significance of this season\u2019s championship.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat would totally discredit this year,\u201d he said<\/a>. \u201cEverybody would just say, \u2018Alright, well, we\u2019re moving on.\u2019 Emotionally, people would move on to next season. And this year\u2019s champion would end up feeling like a dud \u2014 like a lame duck kind of thing. We were all in agreement that you don\u2019t announce a new format for the future before you crown this year\u2019s champion. And I still agree \u2014 that\u2019s the right call.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, Earnhardt Jr. acknowledged that even\u00a0talking\u00a0about next year \u2014 from rule changes to horsepower adjustments \u2014 makes it hard to stay focused on the present. Fans and insiders alike seem to be mentally fast-forwarding through the remainder of the playoffs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll admit, I\u2019m guilty of that myself \u2014 always looking ahead, wishing time away because I\u2019m excited about what\u2019s coming,\u201d he delineated<\/a>. \u201cBut are we sitting here right now doing that with this season? Just saying, \u2018Man, can this hurry up and end so we can move on?\u2019 I feel like that\u2019s where I\u2019m at \u2014 and I don\u2019t love that.\u201d<\/p>\n

All told, Earnhardt Jr. closed with a simple reminder about enjoying the ride for now: \u201cI don\u2019t like that. I want to enjoy\u00a0this\u00a0one. I want to enjoy\u00a0this\u00a0year,\u00a0this\u00a0playoff,\u201d he elaborated<\/a>. \u201cI want to be excited about it, but I\u2019m having a hard time. And I wonder if everyone else is, too, because you can see it \u2014 in the viewership, in the general conversations, in the way people are talking. It just feels like everyone\u2019s already looking past it.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the end, those decisions regarding the playoffs will be made, but Earnhardt Jr. recognizes we won\u2019t have this opportunity, with this crop of drivers, again.
