Late night comedian Jimmy Kimmel on Wednesday opened up about his temporary suspension<\/a> from ABC last month over comments he made<\/a> in the wake of conservative activist Charlie Kirk\u2019s assassination, conceding that he was surprised to be pulled off the air for words he said were \u201cintentionally and, I think, maliciously mischaracterized.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview on Bloomberg Screentime, Kimmel said he didn\u2019t realize his comments had stirred so much controversy until the network announced that \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d would be \u201cpreempted indefinitely.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t think there was a big problem,\u201d he said. \u201cI just saw it as distortion on the part of some of the right-wing media networks, and I aimed to correct it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have problems, like, all the time,\u201d Kimmel added. \u201cAnd it\u2019s kind of funny, because sometimes you think, \u2018Oh, this is not a problem,\u2019 and then it turns into be a big problem, and then sometimes it goes the other way, where you think, like, \u2018Uh-oh, this is gonna be a problem,\u2019 and nobody really notices.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kimmel, though, made clear he did not believe he had committed any wrongdoing, telling Bloomberg\u2019s Lucas Shaw that his comments were \u201cintentionally and, I think, maliciously mischaracterized.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Kimmel recalled that he spent the weekend following his suspension talking to Disney executives, including Dana Walden, the co-chair of Disney Entertainment, which he said helped him \u201cjust kind of understand where everyone was coming from.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can sometimes be reactionary. I can sometimes be aggressive. And I can sometimes be unpleasant. And I think that it helped me really having those days to think about it was helpful,\u201d Kimmel added.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, Kimmel\u2019s show was suspended for just six days.<\/p>\n

The comedian said he and Disney executives agreed on \u201cthe spirit\u201d of what he was going to say upon his return to air but did not go over a script of his remarks.<\/p>\n

While President Donald Trump<\/a> celebrated Kimmel\u2019s suspension and even threatened to sue ABC for bringing the show back<\/a>, the comedian said he \u201cwould love to have Trump on the show for sure.\u201d But Kimmel said he didn\u2019t share the same interest in hosting Brendan Carr, the chair of the Federal Communications Commission.<\/p>\n

Carr had fiercely criticized Kimmel<\/a> following his comments on conservatives\u2019 response to the Kirk shooting, issuing a not-so-veiled threat to Disney, warning penalties could follow if the company did not take action to discipline the host.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can do this the easy way or the hard way,\u201d Carr told a right-wing podcaster hours before ABC suspended Kimmel.<\/p>\n

The ABC host also weighed in on CBS\u2019s announcement that it would be canceling \u201cThe Late Show\u201d next year<\/a>, currently hosted by Stephen Colbert.<\/p>\n

While CBS framed the call as \u201cpurely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night,\u201d Kimmel did not seem convinced.<\/p>\n
