In an emotionally charged courtroom Wednesday, as onlookers gathered for the sentencing<\/a> of University of Idaho<\/a> student killer Bryan Kohberger<\/a>, one of the victim\u2019s sisters delivered a victim impact statement so angry and profound that it brought applause from the gallery.<\/p>\n

Alivea Goncalves, one of the sisters of victim Kaylee Goncalves, launched into a fiery and unflinching criticism of the killer, challenging his self-image and ego, as well as exposing his desperate quest for notoriety.<\/p>\n

She first spoke of the deep bond between Kaylee and Maddie Mogen, one of the other victims, saying they always knew her love and would never expect her to expose her pain to someone like Kohberger.<\/p>\n

\u201cI won\u2019t offer you tears, I won\u2019t offer you trembling,\u201d she said. \u201cDisappointments like you feed on fear.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSit up straight when I talk to you,\u201d she demanded of Kohberger. \u201cYou are not profound, you\u2019re pathetic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou spent months preparing and still all it took was my sister and a sheath,\u201d she said, mocking the killer for leaving DNA on a knife sheath, which eventually helped investigators link him to the crimes of Nov. 13, 2022. \u201cThe truth is, you\u2019re as dumb as they come. Stupid, clumsy, slow, sloppy, weak, dirty.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you were really smart, do you think you\u2019d be here right now? What\u2019s it like needing this much attention just to feel real?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Kohberger remained expressionless as Alivea Goncalves insulted him, at points calling him a \u201csociopath\u201d and \u201cpsychopath,\u201d and challenging his intelligence, actions and motivations.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t win, you just exposed yourself as the coward you are. You\u2019re a delusional, pathetic, hypochondriac loser,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The courtroom applauded after she delivered her final line, saying that if Kohberger hadn\u2019t attacked the victims in the middle of the night, Kaylee Goncalves would have \u201cwould have kicked his f****** a**.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alivea Goncalves wasn\u2019t the only member of her family to deliver harsh words to the man who took the life of Kaylee.<\/p>\n

Steve Goncalves, their father, took aim at Kohberger\u2019s education and intelligence.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday we are here to finish what you started,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Kohberger nodded subtly in response.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou tried to break our community apart, you tried to plant fear, you tried to divide us. You failed,\u201d he said sharply.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were that careless, that foolish, that stupid,\u201d he said, noting investigators had his DNA right away.<\/p>\n

He taunted Kohberger and referenced Kohberger\u2019s degree in criminal justice.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaster\u2019s degree? You\u2019re a joke \u2014 a complete joke.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said Kohberger would die nameless, while the world would remember the legacy of the four victims.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou picked the wrong family, and we\u2019re laughing at you on your way to the pen,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mom Kristi Goncalves also continued her family\u2019s polemic against the killer.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not that good. In fact you\u2019re not that good at anything. You couldn\u2019t secure a job, you couldn\u2019t get along well with others,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She said was disappointed that Kohberger wouldn\u2019t be executed by firing squad and reveled in how he would suffer in prison.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will always be remembered as a loser, an absolute failure,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHell will be waiting,\u201d she warned.<\/p>\n

In all, victim impact statements lasted for more than two hours on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Randy Davis, victim Xana Kernodle\u2019s stepfather, said Kohberger had also ruined the lives of the Kohberger family.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has contaminated, tainted their family name, and pretty much made a horrible miserable thing to ever be related to him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Then he turned to Kohberger.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know what my limits are here. I am struggling, man,\u201d Davis said. He said he wished he had five minutes with Kohberger in the woods to teach him about loss and pain.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are going to suffer, man. I\u2019m shaking because I want to reach out to you but I hope you feel my energy,\u201d he said, banging on his chest. \u201cGo to hell.\u201d<\/p>\n

Xana Kernodle\u2019s aunt, Kim Kernodle, was the first to forgive Kobherger in her testimony<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, this is probably gonna bother everybody, but Bryan, I\u2019m here today to tell you that I have forgiven you because I could no longer live with that hate in your heart,\u201d she said, turning to face Kohberger directly.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny time you want to talk and tell me what happened, get my number, no judgment because I do have questions about what happened,\u201d Kim Kernodle said.<\/p>\n

Xana Kernodle\u2019s mother, Cara Northington, said Jesus allowed her to forgive Kohberger, even though he never expressed remorse.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing man can do to you can ever compare to the wrath of God,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Towards the end of her testimony, she read from the Bible, taking multiple breaks to wipe her tears away and catch her breath.<\/p>\n

Northington said she wouldn\u2019t share good memories of her daughter because she didn\u2019t want Kohberger to know them.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t deserve our good memories that we have,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

In his guilty plea, Kohberger admitted to the murders<\/a> of Mogen, 21; Goncalves, 21; Kernodle, 20; and Ethan Chapin, 20, who were found stabbed to death in their Moscow, Idaho, rental home near the University of Idaho campus in November of 2022.<\/p>\n

He was formally sentenced on Wednesday to life in prison, but declined to make a statement in court that might have addressed the mystery of his motive for the killings.<\/p>\n

Kohberger, 30, received four consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole or appeal under a deal with prosecutors that spared him the death penalty in return for his guilty plea to four counts of first-degree murder.<\/p>\n

Judge Steven Hippler gave Kohberger, dressed in orange jail garb, an opportunity to make a statement before sentence was pronounced.<\/p>\n

The defendant, who sat expressionless beside his lawyers throughout the hearing, answered: \u201cI respectfully decline<\/a>,\u201d the only words he uttered during the proceedings.<\/p>\n
