CHAMPAIGN, Ill.\u00a0 \u2013\u00a0Rutgers women’s soccer lost at Illinois by a score of 2-0 on Thursday night at\u00a0Demirjian Park.<\/p>\n
The Scarlet Knights (3-5-4, 1-5-1) were unable to overcome a pair of late first half goals by the Fighting Illini\u00a0(11-2-1, 4-2-1).\u00a0<\/p>\n
RU was able to come out strong with a pair of corner kicks in the first five minutes, but could not find the back of the net.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The rest of the first half saw back-and-forth action, with the Scarlet Knights putting three shots on frame and forcing saves from the Illini keeper. In the 39th minute, a through ball from Illinois found an attacker for the opening goal. Just 27 seconds later, a foul in the box gave the Fighting Illini a penalty kick, which they converted to take a 2-0 advantage at the half.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Rutgers kept up its offensive pressure in the second half, creating a litany of chances. The Scarlet Knights totaled seven shots on goal in the second half, but all were saved as Illinois was able to preserve the shutout.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In total, RU had 10 shots on goal, including seven from Ashley Baran<\/a>.
