Here, we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/roundups\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">round up<\/a> six recent examples of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/adaptive-reuse\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">adaptive reuse<\/a> projects that have given buildings for the era a new lease of life.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/10\/06\/asif-khan-tselinny-center-contemporary-culture-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2255055 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/asif-khan-tselinny-center-contemporary-culture-almaty-sq_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x852.jpg\" alt=\"Tselinny Center of Contemporary Culture by Asif Khan\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2364\"  \/><\/a>Photo by Laurian Ghinitoiu<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/10\/06\/asif-khan-tselinny-center-contemporary-culture-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tselinny Center of Contemporary Culture, Kazakhstan, by Asif Khan<\/a><\/p>\n<p>British designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/asif-khan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Asif Khan<\/a> has converted a Soviet-era cinema in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/kazakhstan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kazakhstan<\/a> into a large cultural centre containing galleries, workshops, office space and a rooftop restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>The renovation saw the addition of an undulating facade described by Khan as\u00a0&#8220;a cloud-like threshold, softening the rigidity and control of the Soviet concrete frame&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/10\/06\/asif-khan-tselinny-center-contemporary-culture-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Find out more about Tselinny Center of Contemporary Culture \u203a<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/08\/07\/forma-pavilion-13-renovation-kyiv\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2233894 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/forma-pavilion-13-renovation-kyiv-sq_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x852.jpg\" alt=\"Pavilion 13 by Forma\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2364\"  \/><\/a>Photo by Vitalii Halanzha<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/08\/07\/forma-pavilion-13-renovation-kyiv\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pavilion 13, Ukraine, by Forma<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Recently opened in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/kiev\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kyiv<\/a> is the carefully updated Pavilion 13 \u2013 a Soviet-era exhibition hall initially built to host coal-mining industry events but out of use for more than 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/formaarchitects.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Forma<\/a> largely preserved and repaired the building&#8217;s original structure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We see our experience as a case study in how to engage with modernist architectural heritage without erasing its character or forcing it into a new mould,&#8221; studio partners Iryna Miroshnykova and Oleksii Petrov told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/08\/07\/forma-pavilion-13-renovation-kyiv\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Find out more about Pavilion 13 \u203a<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/08\/08\/nerihu-telegraph-hotel-tbilisi-georgia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2255701 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/telegraph-hotel-tbilisi-neru-hu-sq_dezeen_1704_col_0-852x852.jpg\" alt=\"Telegraph Hotel in Tbilisi\" width=\"1704\" height=\"1704\"  \/><\/a>Photo courtesy of Neri &amp; Hu<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/08\/08\/nerihu-telegraph-hotel-tbilisi-georgia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Telegraph Hotel, Georgia, by Neri &amp; Hu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This summer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/tbilisi\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tbilisi<\/a>&#8216;s former central post office was transformed into a 239-room <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/hotels\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hotel<\/a> by Chinese architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/nerihu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Neri&amp;Hu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The building is one of the Georgian capital&#8217;s most prominent from Soviet times, and the renovation sought to preserve its distinctive stone facade while adding glazing at street level to afford passersby a glimpse into the hotel&#8217;s public spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Just a couple of streets away sits another hotel created out of the transformation of a Soviet-era building. Stamba Hotel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2018\/12\/14\/video-stamba-hotel-tbilisi-georgia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">now occupies the former printing house of Georgia&#8217;s first communist newspaper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/08\/08\/nerihu-telegraph-hotel-tbilisi-georgia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Find noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fika, Kazakhstan, by NAAW Studio<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This 1950s building in Almaty was formerly a housing block for Soviet railway workers, but has been converted into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/restaurants\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">restaurant<\/a> by local practice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/naaw-studio\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NAAW Studio<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted to ensure that the interior did not romanticise the legacy of the colonial era, but at the same time did not deny it,&#8221; NAAW co-founder Elvira Bakubayeva told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>To this end, the dilapidated original ceiling mouldings were retained but not fully restored, while the designers adopted a common Soviet technique of half-painting the walls, but added a playful twist by combining it with clashing patterns.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\">Pyramid of Tirana, Albania, by MVRDV and IRI Architecture<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Beyond the former borders of the USSR in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/albania\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Albania<\/a>, the Pyramid of Tirana first opened in 1988 as a museum in honour of communist dictator Enver Hoxha.<\/p>\n<p>By the time Dutch architecture studio\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/mvrdv\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MVRDV<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/iri_architecture\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IRI Architecture<\/a> began a project to turn the building into a cultural hub it had become a ruin, climbed up and slid down by young locals.<\/p>\n<p>In a nod to this symbolic legacy, steps were added all over the building&#8217;s roof, with a retained section that can still be used as a slide.<\/p>\n<p><a Studio<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/bucharest\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bucharest<\/a>, local designers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/andazota\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anda Zota<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/muromurostudio.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Muromuro Studio<\/a> created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/listening-bars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">listening bar<\/a> on the ground floor of a communist-era apartment block.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the building as a &#8220;landmark of Romanian modernism&#8221;, they sought to keep as much of the its fabric intact as possible, including the terrazzo floors and concrete pillars, while introducing warmth through carefully considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/lighting\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lighting design<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To open the bar up to the street, a folding mechanical glass wall was introduced to the facade.<\/p>\n<p><a
