{"id":206112,"date":"2025-10-11T22:40:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-11T22:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/206112\/"},"modified":"2025-10-11T22:40:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-11T22:40:11","slug":"nanoparticle-treatment-reverses-alzheimers-in-mice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/206112\/","title":{"rendered":"Nanoparticle Treatment Reverses Alzheimer\u2019s in Mice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Scientists have developed a nanoparticle-based treatment that successfully reversed Alzheimer\u2019s disease in mice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As detailed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41392-025-02426-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:new paper;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">new paper<\/a> published in the journal Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy, the team co-led by the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia, Spain (IBEC), and West China Hospital, Sichuan University, developed bioactive \u201csupramolecular drugs\u201d that can proactively repair the blood-brain barrier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The barrier plays an important role in the health of the brain, defending it from harmful substances and other pathogens. Alzheimer\u2019s has been linked to a weakening of the barrier\u2019s integrity, allowing for impairing toxins to make it through.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">More specifically, the disease causes a \u201cwaste\u201d protein, called amyloid-beta, to accumulate in the brain by interrupting its natural clearance system. The team\u2019s approach allows these protein molecules to pass through the blood-brain barrier and be eliminated through the bloodstream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a series of experiments, the team used gene-hacked mice that produce large amounts of the protein and therefore show Alzheimer\u2019s-like declines in cognitive function.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Administered doses of the supramolecular drugs caused levels of the protein to decline almost immediately in the mice\u2019s brains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cOnly one hour after the injection, we observed a reduction of 50-60 percent in amyloid-beta amount inside the brain,\u201d said coauthor and West China Hospital of Sichuan University researcher in a <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2025-10-scientists-reverse-alzheimer-mice-nanoparticles.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:statement;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It\u2019s a promising new approach to treating a disease that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/alzheimers-dementia\/facts-figures\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:affects over seven million Americans;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">affects over seven million Americans<\/a> age 65 and older. Barring any breakthroughs, that number could grow to almost 14 million by 2060, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38689398\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:2024 study;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">2024 study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cMany treatments have been designed to clear amyloid beta, the sticky protein that builds up in Alzheimer\u2019s brains,\u201d principal investigator and IBEC research professor Giuseppe Battaglia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Health_News\/2025\/10\/06\/scientists-use-nanoparticles-clear-Alzheimers-brain-toxins-mice\/1391759759260\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:told United Press International;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">told United Press International<\/a>. \u201cSome of these can remove the plaques, but that alone hasn\u2019t stopped memory loss or slowed the disease enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cOur work suggests a different approach: instead of focusing solely on removing what\u2019s already gone wrong inside the brain, we aim to repair the system that keeps the brain healthy in the first place \u2014 its blood vessels and protective barrier,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Particularly exciting: the researchers found that the cognitive improvements in the mice were substantial. A mouse that they said was roughly the equivalent of a 90-year-old human, had \u201crecovered the behavior of a healthy mouse\u201d after receiving the treatment six months prior.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe long-term effect comes from restoring the brain\u2019s vasculature,\u201d Battaglia explained in the statement. \u201cWe think it works like a cascade: when toxic species such as amyloid-beta accumulate, disease progresses. But once the vasculature is able to function again, it starts clearing A\u03b2 and other harmful molecules, allowing the whole system to recover its balance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhat\u2019s remarkable is that our nanoparticles act as a drug and seem to activate a feedback mechanism that brings this clearance pathway back to normal levels,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The supramolecular drugs reset the brain\u2019s ability to pass amyloid-beta through the blood-brain barrier by mimicking the natural processes that are interrupted by Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">By renewing these waste-clearing pathways, the drugs allow levels of the harmful protein to drop \u2014 while simultaneously maintaining the brain\u2019s vascular system for improved brain function.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cRestoring this barrier improves blood flow, reduces inflammation, and helps the brain recover its balance,\u201d Battaglia told UPI. \u201cThis approach could slow Alzheimer\u2019s progression more effectively by treating one of its earliest and most overlooked causes, the breakdown of the brain\u2019s own defense system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">However, plenty more research still has to be done before we can trial similar approaches in humans suffering from Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThere are many ongoing efforts in animal models to find innovative methods of crossing the BBB to improve efficiency and precision for drug delivery,\u201d Alzheimer\u2019s Association director of scientific engagement Courtney Kloske told UPI, \u201cbut we are still a long way from these technologies being proven safe and effective in humans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">More on Alzheimer\u2019s: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/lab-mice-exposed-microplastics-show-200016012.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Lab Mice Exposed to Microplastics Show Signs of Dementia;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lab Mice Exposed to Microplastics Show Signs of Dementia<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Scientists have developed a nanoparticle-based treatment that successfully reversed Alzheimer\u2019s disease in mice.
