Following Diane Keaton<\/a>\u2018s death at 79, Hollywood is mourning the loss of a talented actress whose work spanned decades.<\/p>\n

After the Oscar winner\u2019s family announced her death<\/a> on Saturday, many of Keaton\u2019s peers in the industry took to social media to pay tribute to the late actress known for her performances in The Godfather (1972), Annie Hall (1977) and many other memorable titles.<\/p>\n

Robert De Niro, who worked with Keaton several times since The Godfather Part II (1974) said in a statement, \u201cI am very sad to hear of Diane\u2019s\u00a0passing.\u00a0I was very fond of her, and the news of her leaving us has taken me totally by surprise. I was not expecting her to leave us. She will be missed.\u00a0May she rest in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mary Steenburgen, Keaton\u2019s co-star in Book Club (2018) and Book Club: The Next Chapter (2023), said in a statement shared with Deadline, \u201cDiane was magic. There was no one, nor will there ever be, anyone like her. I loved her and felt blessed to be her friend. My love to her family. What a wonder she was!!!\u201d<\/p>\n

Their co-star Jane Fonda wrote on Instagram<\/a>, \u201cIt\u2019s hard to believe\u2026or accept\u2026that Diane has passed. She was always a spark of life and light, constantly giggling at her own foibles, being limitlessly creative\u2026in her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her friends, her homes, her library, her world view. Unique is what she was. And, though she didn\u2019t know it or wouldn\u2019t admit it, man she was a fine actress!\u201d<\/p>\n

Bette Midler, who starred with Keaton in The First Wives Club (1996), wrote on Instagram<\/a>, \u201cThe brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me. She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was\u2026oh, la, lala!\u201d<\/p>\n

Mandy Moore, who played one of Keaton\u2019s daughters in Because I Said So (2007), wrote on Instagram<\/a>, \u201cThey say don\u2019t meet your heroes but I got to work with one of mine and even call her \u2018mom\u2019 for a few months. An honor of a lifetime. What an incandescent human Di is and was. I am so sad she\u2019s gone for all the reasons but also because it felt like she\u2019d be here forever, dazzling us with her talent and charm (and her style, c\u2019mon)!!! One of the very best to ever do it. All my love to her children and loved ones.\u201d<\/p>\n

Steve Martin, who played her husband in the Father of the Bride movies, shared an excerpt from a 2021 conversation between Keaton and their co-star Martin Short for Interview Magazine<\/a>. \u201cDon\u2019t know who first posted this, but it sums up our delightful relationship with Diane,\u201d he captioned the post<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho\u2019s sexier, me or Steve Martin?\u201d asked Short, to which Keaton quipped: \u201cI mean, you\u2019re both idiots.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kimberly Williams-Paisley, who played Keaton\u2019s daughter in the Father of the Bride movies, wrote on Instagram<\/a>, \u201cDiane, working with you will always be one of the highlights of my life. You are one of a kind, and it was thrilling to be in your orbit for a time. Thank you for your kindness, your generosity, your talent, and above all, your laughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paul Feig said on X<\/a>, \u201cI was so honored to call Diane Keaton a friend. She was an amazingly kind and creative person who also just happened to be a Hollywood legend. She has been taken from us far too soon. We will miss you, Diane.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ben Stiller wrote in a post<\/a>, \u201cDiane Keaton. One of the greatest film actors ever. An icon of style, humor and comedy. Brilliant. What a person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Belinda Carlisle wrote on X<\/a>, \u201cI cant! Diane Keaton\u00a0was such a talent and a BIG part of my career.\u00a0She directed two videos of mine \u2013 \u2018Heaven Is A Place on Earth\u2019 and the video for \u2018I Get Weak\u2019. She was kind and eccentric and I was blessed to know her. RIP Diane, you will be missed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Born Diane Hall on Jan. 5, 1946 in Los Angeles, Keaton moved to New York to pursue an entertainment career, studying acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse and making her Broadway debut as an understudy in Hair.<\/p>\n

Keaton went on to star in Woody Allen\u2019s production of Play It Again, Sam in 1969, earning a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play. Allen later cast her in her Oscar-winning role in Annie Hall (1977), also working together over the years in Manhattan (1979), Radio Days (1987) and Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993).<\/p>\n

Following her onscreen debut in Lovers and Other Strangers (1970), Keaton made her breakout performance in Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s The Godfather (1972), reprising the role in The Godfather Part II (1974) and The Godfather Part III (1993).<\/p>\n

Keaton was also known for her performances in such films as Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977), Crimes of the Heart (1986), Baby Boom (1987), Father of the Bride (1991), The First Wives Club (1996), Marvin\u2019s Room (1996), Something\u2019s Gotta Give (2003), The Family Stone (2005), Book Club (2018) and Mack & Rita (2022).<\/p>\n
