(Supplied: Rosemary Miller)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mrs Miller&#8217;s words would underpin expanded, emergency drought support for South Australian farmers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Today, the Miller farm \u2014 and many others in the region \u2014 paint a more positive picture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The lambs born on bare, brown paddocks just a few months ago are now grazing on lush, fresh feed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Crops sown with hopes and prayers now stand tall in swathes of yellow and green.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s good to walk down the main street or take kids to local sport and see people smiling again,&#8221;  Mrs Miller said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I think the South East is feeling optimistic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;After these early spring rains, people can now say &#8216;let&#8217;s keep going&#8217; which is quite a turnaround, coming off the back of two very tough years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tough times build tough people<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While some <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-05\/farmers-begin-long-recovery-after-year-long-sa-drought\/105850610\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105850610\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">South Australian regions remain on a knife-edge<\/a>, Mrs Miller said some farmers on the Limestone Coast had the opportunity to claw back financial losses, with some districts recording up to 2 inches of rain in the first week of October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;To know we can feed our lambs and grow our crops to their full potential \u2014 it&#8217;s positive and so many farmers here are smiling and saying there&#8217;s opportunity there,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The outlook in the Upper South East is also much improved.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A farmer in a green shirt feeds hay off the back of a ute to sheep as his son watches on.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/b51ebd087fef4861d8cd055fe33c81e6\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Richie Miller and his son feed sheep during the 2024-25 drought in Naracoorte, SA.\u00a0 (Supplied: Abby Miller)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Michael Hunt farms at Cannawigara near Bordertown, where the season also got off to a memorably difficult start.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We started planting some barley and some canola and then we stopped because it was dead, dry, dusty and depressing,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We had a team meeting and decided to just keep going. (ABC South East SA: Elsie Adamo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re so much better off than we were \u2026 from where we&#8217;ve come from, that&#8217;s really good,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t rain grass, it rains potential.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While the crops on his farm are looking healthy, Mr Rayson doesn&#8217;t need to travel far for the outlook to change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Even just 10 or 15 kilometres down the road and the crops don&#8217;t look as bright,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Hutchings is expecting crops and pastures south of Keith to have average to slightly above average yields this season, but for those farmers further north it is a different story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;In my area, my variation from north to south is the most I&#8217;ve seen for a long, long time just because of lower rainfall as we move north,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I was feeling very low in May, but once things started turning around you realise that it&#8217;s not forever.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sometimes you&#8217;ve got to be thankful for what you&#8217;ve got.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mrs Miller echoes this sentiment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I sometimes feel bad for feeling good because I know that there&#8217;s still a lot of farmers across the state who don&#8217;t know what happens next,&#8221;
