Brad Moran, NASCAR\u2019s Managing Director for the Cup Series<\/a>, made it clear once again, there\u2019s a limit to what teams can say to their drivers during a race. On Saturday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Brad Moran gathered Cup Series crew chiefs to issue a firm reminder about NASCAR\u2019s radio communication rules, particularly regarding points status updates during active races.<\/p>\n \u201cYou can say anything that helps your driver in their position and that\u2019s it,\u201d Moran told NBC<\/a> Sports. \u201cThey all know better than to say things that don\u2019t involve their driver getting the best finish they can get. It\u2019s as simple as that.\u201d<\/p>\n That may sound simple, but in the intense playoffs of NASCAR, it is a very important separator.<\/p>\n Drivers Respond to NASCAR Tough Radio Regulations.<\/p>\n Not all drivers view the policy the same way. For Denny Hamlin<\/a>, the ability to know what\u2019s happening around him is part of smart racing.<\/p>\n \u201cI would like to know if I\u2019m in a vulnerable spot, that the person behind me is emboldened to make a bold move,\u201d Hamlin said.<\/p>\n Ryan Blaney<\/a> agreed but noted he mainly asks for context rather than strategy.<\/p>\n \u201cMainly, if I do ask, \u2018Hey, give me an update on this stuff,\u2019 it\u2019s just to see who is desperate. It\u2019s not going to change the way I race on the offensive, but it might give me an idea if someone\u2019s willing to do something over the top because he\u2019s in that mode.\u201d<\/p>\n Kyle Larson added that staying informed helps him plan his race. \u201cI just like to know what\u2019s going on. It allows me to strategize how I\u2019m going to run and get the best possible finish. But yeah, I mean, there\u2019s been a lot of talk and drama around it the last few years. I see how it\u2019s a little sticky. The very next day, Denny Hamlin was frustrated when his team didn\u2019t tell him Ross Chastain was below the cutline after a pass, a moment that triggered a desperate move by Chastain that spun both cars.<\/p>\n Martinsville\u2019s Costly Lesson<\/p>\n \u201cMoran pointed back to the 2023 Martinsville playoff race, a controversial moment that forced NASCAR to act decisively. Following questionable on-track cooperation between drivers of the same manufacturer, NASCAR cracked down, issuing $600,000 in fines<\/a>, suspending nine people across three teams, and docking both driver and owner points\u201d as reported by Dustin Long of NBC Sports<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThese guys have been in this industry a long time, and they understand where we draw a line,\u201d Moran said. \u201cIt costs organizations hundreds of thousands of dollars. Crew chiefs<\/a>, spotters, and competition directors were suspended. So, we drew the line, first at the Roval, and again at Martinsville.
