{"id":209772,"date":"2025-10-13T12:09:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-13T12:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/209772\/"},"modified":"2025-10-13T12:09:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T12:09:08","slug":"taking-vitamin-d2-supplements-can-lower-vitamin-d3-in-body-research-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/209772\/","title":{"rendered":"Taking vitamin D2 supplements can lower vitamin D3 in body, research shows"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Vitamin D is known to be essential to many aspects of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/wellness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">human health<\/a> \u2014 but a new study suggests that taking a certain form of it can have a negative effect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The more potent and longer-lasting form, vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is produced naturally when the body is exposed to sunlight and is also found in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">animal products<\/a>, while vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) comes from plant or fungal sources, per the National Institutes of Health.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from the University of Surrey in the U.K. found that taking vitamin D2 can cause reduced levels of vitamin D3 in the body.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/overlooked-supplement-could-slow-aging-boost-brain-heart-health-expert-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">OVERLOOKED SUPPLEMENT COULD SLOW AGING AND BOOST BRAIN AND HEART HEALTH, EXPERT SAYS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>They made this determination by analyzing 11 randomized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/medical-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">controlled trials<\/a> including 655 adults, which showed that people taking vitamin D2 supplements had less vitamin D3 than those who did not take D2, according to a university press release.<\/p>\n<p>The findings of the study \u2014 conducted along with the John Innes Centre and the Quadram Institute Bioscience in Norwich, England \u2014 were published in the journal Nutrition Reviews.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/man-holding-vitamin-d-pill.jpg\" alt=\"Man holding Vitamin D pill\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Vitamin D is known to be essential to human health \u2014 but a new study suggests that taking a certain form of it can have a negative effect. (iStock)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Vitamin D supplements are important, especially between October and March, when our bodies cannot make vitamin D from sunlight in the U.K.,&#8221; lead researcher Emily Brown, a Ph.D. research fellow from the University of Surrey\u2019s Nutrition, Exercise, Chronobiology &amp; Sleep Discipline, stated in the press release.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, we discovered that vitamin D2 supplements can actually decrease levels of vitamin D3 in the body, which is a previously unknown effect of taking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/vitamins-supplements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">these supplements<\/a>. This study suggests that, subject to personal considerations, vitamin D3 supplements may be more beneficial for most individuals over vitamin D2.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/common-vitamin-shown-slash-skin-cancer-risk-some-groups-study-suggests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">COMMON VITAMIN SHOWN TO SLASH SKIN CANCER RISK IN SOME GROUPS, STUDY SUGGESTS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Previous research has suggested that the two forms of vitamin D are not interchangeable.
