{"id":20998,"date":"2025-07-24T17:08:08","date_gmt":"2025-07-24T17:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/20998\/"},"modified":"2025-07-24T17:08:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T17:08:08","slug":"tornado-risk-for-the-ottawa-gatineau-area-thursday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/20998\/","title":{"rendered":"Tornado risk for the Ottawa-Gatineau area Thursday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Environment Canada has issued\u00a0severe thunderstorm watches for almost all of western Quebec and some of Renfrew County\u00a0Thursday afternoon and evening, noting a tornado could develop.<\/p>\n<p>Forecasters also mention\u00a0strong gusts of wind, large hail and heavy rain along with lightning.<\/p>\n<p>The Outaouais\u00a0exceptions are Gatineau, which almost always falls under the same\u00a0alerts as\u00a0Ottawa, and the Grenville-sur-la-Rouge area that commonly shares alerts with Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>Environment Canada\u00a0has been mentioning\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ECCCWeatherON\/status\/1948101802412400848\" rel=\"nofollow\">the possibility of\u00a0tornadoes for eastern Ontario<\/a>\u00a0since Tuesday. The first alerts,\u00a0for the Algonquin Park and Deep River areas, came around 11:45 a.m. Thursday. Gusts there could reach 110 km\/h, according to the watch.<\/p>\n<p>Environment Canada\u00a0recommends staying indoors and taking\u00a0cover in a basement where possible during these types of threatening weather, and notes strong winds can damage trees or buildings and overturn vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00a0issues a severe thunderstorm watch when conditions are favourable for a storm to develop. A warning is issued when there is evidence that a thunderstorm is imminent or occurring that will produce damaging hail, wind or rain.<\/p>\n<p>Tornado watches and warnings follow a similar system.<\/p>\n<p>A very hot Thursday is also expected, with Ottawa potentially reaching a high of 34 C that feels like 43 with humidity.
