Branch added, \u201cIt was a childish thing, but I\u2019m tired of people doing stuff in between the play and refs don\u2019t catch it. They be trying to bully me out there. I should have never did it. It was childish.\u201d<\/p>\n
Smith-Schuster pushed back on Branch\u2019s interpretation of events after the game, telling reporters he was \u201cjust blocking him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell, who found himself in the middle of the mess and in a tense exchange with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, addressed the incident after the game.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI love Brian Branch,\u201d Campbell, 49, said. \u201cBut what he did is inexcusable, and it\u2019s not going to be accepted here. It\u2019s not what we do. It\u2019s not what we\u2019re about. I apologized to Coach [Andy] Reid and the Chiefs, and Smith-Schuster. That\u2019s not OK. That\u2019s not what we do here. It\u2019s not going to be OK. He knows it. Our team knows it. That\u2019s not what we do.\u201d<\/p>\n
Veteran Lions defensive end D.J. Reader said he planned on talking to Branch about his behavior in the coming days.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll have that conversation,\u201d Reader, 31, told reporters after the game. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to have that conversation right now because everybody\u2019s trying to have the conversation. I\u2019m sure I\u2019ll get a chance to talk to him, but it\u2019s tough because he\u2019s got that stinger for a reason as a player and you don\u2019t ever want to take that away, but you also want him to be smart. Not only for us, but also for himself. To protect his money, to protect him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mahomes, 30, echoed Smith-Schuster\u2019s sentiment during his postgame interview with NBC sideline reporter Melissa Stark.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI mean, we play the game in between the whistles,\u201d Mahomes said. \u201cThey can do all the extracurricular stuff they want to do. But we play the game in between the whistles.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mahomes later told reporters during his postgame press conference, \u201cThat\u2019s a physical team, and they have a mentality that they come in to play with, and we\u2019re going to match that mentality. We\u2019re not afraid to go up against anybody.
