{"id":211002,"date":"2025-10-13T23:44:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-13T23:44:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/211002\/"},"modified":"2025-10-13T23:44:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T23:44:12","slug":"at-sharm-summit-trump-and-world-leaders-sign-up-for-peace-in-gaza-with-netanyahu-absent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/211002\/","title":{"rendered":"At Sharm summit, Trump and world leaders sign up for peace in Gaza, with Netanyahu absent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US President Donald Trump called for a new era of harmony in the Middle East on Monday during a global summit on Gaza\u2019s future held in Egypt\u2019s Sharm el-Sheikh, urging countries to sign up for the Abraham Accords and trying to advance broader peace in the region after visiting Israel to celebrate a US-brokered ceasefire with Hamas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to put the old feuds and bitter hatreds behind us,\u201d Trump said, and he urged leaders \u201cto declare that our future will not be ruled by the fights of generations past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s whirlwind trip to the Middle East, which included the summit in Egypt and a speech at the Knesset in Jerusalem earlier in the day, came at a fragile moment of hope for ending two years of war between Israel and Hamas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody said it\u2019s not possible to do. And it\u2019s going to happen. And it is happening before your very eyes,\u201d Trump said alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly three dozen countries, including some from Europe and the Middle East, were represented at the summit. (Suzanne Plunkett, Pool Photo via AP)<\/p>\n<p>The document was \u201cgoing to spell out rules and regulations and lots of other things,\u201d Trump said as he signed it, repeating twice that \u201cit\u2019s going to hold up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s visit to the region came as Hamas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/all-20-remaining-living-hostages-return-to-israel-after-over-2-years-in-hamas-captivity\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">released<\/a> the 20 remaining living hostages abducted during the terror group\u2019s onslaught of October 7, 2023, which sparked the war in Gaza, and Israel released some 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, in accordance with the first phase of Trump\u2019s 20-point ceasefire plan.<\/p>\n<p>Sissi\u2019s office said the Sharm el-Sheikh summit aimed to \u201cend the war\u201d in Gaza and \u201cusher in a new page of peace and regional stability\u201d in line with Trump\u2019s vision. (Evan Vucci \/ POOL \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Trump told reporters that Hamas was looking for the bodies of the remaining deceased hostages that it has yet to return. Hamas only returned four of the 28 bodies of killed hostages on Monday \u2014 far fewer than anticipated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a pretty gruesome task\u2026 They know the areas [where they\u2019re located] and\u2026 they\u2019re doing it in conjunction with Israel, and they\u2019ll going to be finding quite a few of them,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>Asked when the talks on phase two of the Gaza deal will begin, Trump said those talks have already started.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe phases are all a little bit mixed in with each other. You start cleaning up [Gaza],\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking later at the summit, Trump said the Gaza ceasefire was the start of a \u201cbeautiful Middle East\u201d and urged world leaders to join the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations in 2020, during Trump\u2019s first term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the day that people across the region and around the world have been working, striving, hoping and praying for,\u201d Trump said. \u201cNobody thought this could happen with the historic agreement we have just signed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose prayers of millions have finally been answered. The hostages have been returned, and further work goes on\u2026 to save bodies,\u201d he said. (Hamas is still holding the remains of 24 fallen hostages.) \u201cTogether, we\u2019ve achieved what everybody said was impossible. At long last, we have peace in the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter years of suffering and bloodshed, the war in Gaza is over. Humanitarian aid is now pouring in, including hundreds of truckloads of food and medical equipment and other supplies,\u201d he said. \u201cNow the rebuilding begins.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Trump thanked the leaders of Egypt, Qatar and Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>Egypt and Qatar have been key mediators throughout the war. Turkey, which has hosted Hamas leaders, has recently stepped in to pressure the terror group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s always there when I need him,\u201d Trump said of Erdogan, a fierce critic of Israel and supporter of Hamas. He also thanked the leaders of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also noted the presence of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who was reportedly supposed to make a historic visit to Israel on Tuesday but later denied the reports. Israel has rejected a PA role in post-war Gaza, the US barred Abbas last month from entering the US for the UN General Assembly, and he was a belated invitee to the summit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom this moment forward, we can build a region that\u2019s strong, stable, prosperous and united in rejecting the path of terror once and for all,\u201d said Trump.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Pakistan&#8217;s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif calls for Donald Trump to receive the Nobel Peace Prize:  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mr. President, I would like to salute you for your exemplary leadership. Many of you have had dancing in the streets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope everybody is going to join the Abraham Accords\u2026 Now, a lot of people, even today, are talking about all joining up. We don\u2019t have a Gaza and we don\u2019t have an Iran as an excuse,\u201d Trump said, apparently alluding to June\u2019s 12-day Israel-Iran war, during which the US struck Iran\u2019s nuclear sites and, per Trump, obliterated them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the momentum now is toward a great, glorious and lasting peace,\u201d Trump continued. \u201cOur commitment to fulfilling the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/full-text-trumps-comprehensive-plan-to-end-the-gaza-conflict\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">20-point plan<\/a> we developed together will be the crucial foundation for achieving that bright future.<\/p>\n<p>During the summit, the US president met for the first time in eight years with Abbas, whose unpopular Palestinian Authority is supposed to take the reins of Gaza from a transitional international administration after undergoing a program of reforms, under Trump\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2025\/10\/AP25286580029235-e1760379208972.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3664511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/AP25286580029235-e1760379208972-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas pose for a photo in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, October 13, 2025. (Suzanne Plunkett, Pool Photo via AP)<\/p>\n<p>French President Emmanuel Macron escorted Abbas to the podium to meet Trump, who spoke with the PA president for a few seconds before holding his hand and giving a thumbs-up to the cameras.<\/p>\n<p>Israel has accused the PA of encouraging terrorism in its school system and through payments to terrorists, and rejected any role for the PA in Gaza\u2019s transitional administration, whose Palestinian security force is slated to be trained by Jordan and Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>Other leaders who came to Sharm el-Sheikh included UN chief Ant\u00f3nio Guterres and the heads of state of Azerbaijan, Iraq, Britain, Germany,\u00a0 Canada, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Hungary.<\/p>\n<p>World leaders lined up to have their photos taken with Trump ahead of the meeting. (SAUL LOEB \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu had accepted a last-minute invitation but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/netanyahu-turns-down-last-minute-invite-to-egypt-summit-citing-upcoming-holiday\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reneged<\/a> an hour later, citing the summit\u2019s proximity to Simchat Torah. However, diplomatic sources said Netanyahu canceled the trip due to Iraqi and Turkish opposition, while a Hebrew media report said he canceled due to fear of blowback from his right-wing base.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, reports emerged that Subianto, the Indonesian president, was slated to visit Israel, even though his country, the world\u2019s largest Muslim nation, has no formal ties with Israel.
