Ask any Batman fan to name the worst entry in the franchise<\/a>, and chances are they\u2019ll say Batman & Robin. The 1997 sequel cranked the camp up to eleven and effectively put the franchise on ice for years. For stars Chris O\u2019Donnell and Alicia Silverstone, it was devastating to realize just how much audiences despised Batman & Robin.<\/p>\n

The pair spoke with Entertainment Weekly<\/a>, with O\u2019Donnell revealing that it wasn\u2019t until the press tour that they realized just how poorly the film was being received.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of a sudden, you were starting to get the feedback, and you realize it was just going sideways,\u201d O\u2019Donnell said. \u201cThere was so much hatred of the film when it came out. It was like, \u2018Oh my God.\u2019 And you want to do your job and promote the movie\u2026. I remember at one point [director] Joel Schumacher just threw up the flag. He\u2019s like, \u2018I\u2019m out. I can\u2019t do it anymore.\u2019 He was so heartbroken and kind of bummed out about it.\u201c<\/p>\n

O\u2019Donnell added that while the backlash against Batman & Robin \u201cwas a tough one for us to all do digest,\u201d he still feels \u201clucky to be in the movie, and it was fun to be a part of it. It is what it is. Some work out and some don\u2019t.\u201d Silverstone noted that the film did eventually find an audience who appreciated its tone. \u201cWhen it came out, I don\u2019t think people liked it very much,\u201d she said. \u201cBut later on people told me it\u2019s\u00a0their favorite movie. [At least] all my gay friends. It\u2019s very camp.\u201c<\/p>\n

Since the release of Batman & Robin, the character has returned in Christopher Nolan\u2019s Dark Knight trilogy, starring Christian Bale. Ben Affleck took over the role for the DCEU, appearing in four movies. The latest Caped Crusader is Robert Pattinson, who starred in Matt Reeves\u2019 The Batman. A sequel is in development, with production scheduled to begin next year. Details are sparse, but Reeves has teased that the villain<\/a> has \u201cnever really been done in a movie before.\u201c<\/p>\n

Farrell recently read the script<\/a> for the sequel and was very moved. \u201cThis film, like the first one, works on multiple levels, both as pure entertainment and as an investigation into the psychology of the characters of Bruce Wayne and Batman,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s really, really moving. I found myself very emotionally moved while I was reading it.\u201c<\/p>\n
