NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 That\u2019s show business for you! Taylor Swift\u2019s<\/a> 12th studio album, \u201cThe Life of a Showgirl,\u201d<\/a> has officially sold 4.002 million equivalent album units \u2014 which includes album sales and streaming activity \u2014 in its first week in the U.S. That is the biggest first week in modern music history; at least, according to Luminate, the industry data and analytics company that began tracking sales in 1991.<\/p>\n

Swift broke the record set by Adele\u2019s \u201c25,\u201d<\/a> which sold 3.378 million copies in its first week in 2015 in the U.S.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Life of a Showgirl\u201d was released Oct. 3. In its first week, pure album sales totaled 3,479,500 copies.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s also become the solo artist with the most No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, with 15. She was previously tied with Drake<\/a> and Jay-Z,<\/a> who each have 14. <\/p>\n

Swift is now just behind The Beatles,<\/a> who boast of 19 No. 1 albums.<\/p>\n

She is no stranger to breaking records, and when it comes to \u201cThe Life of a Showgirl,\u201d the history-making started immediately. In its first day of release, the album sold 2.7 million copies in traditional album sales, breaking her record for most first week sales\u2026 in one day.<\/a><\/p>\n

Her last album, 2024\u2019s \u201cThe Tortured Poets Department,\u201d amassed 2.61 million<\/a> equivalent album units in the U.S. in its first week.<\/p>\n

Also, according to Luminate, \u201cThe Life of a Showgirl\u201d broke the record for the most copies of a vinyl album sold in a single week in the U.S., with 1.2 million copies in its first day. <\/p>\n

The previous record holder was \u201cThe Tortured Poets Department,\u201d which sold 859,000 copies on vinyl in its first week.<\/p>\n

Vinyl variants move the needle<\/p>\n

One of the reasons Swift has seen so much success is that she released her record in several different variants. Those include multiple editions specific to Target \u2014 three CDs titled \u201cIt\u2019s Frightening,\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s Rapturous\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s Beautiful,\u201d as well as an exclusive vinyl release, \u201cThe Crowd Is Your King.\u201d <\/p>\n

There are a number of other vinyl variants as well: \u201cThe Tiny Bubble in Champagne Collection,\u201d \u201cThe Baby That\u2019s Show Business Collection,\u201d \u201cThe Shiny Bug Collection,\u201d and the standard LP and cassette, in \u201csweat and vanilla perfume Portofino orange vinyl.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

New Disney+ projects will keep Swift at the top<\/p>\n

The news of Swift\u2019s record-breaking sales arrived just after \u201cGood Morning America\u201d revealed Monday that she\u2019ll have two new projects at Disney+. That\u2019s a six-episode, behind-the-scenes docuseries about her landmark \u201cEras Tour\u201d<\/a> titled \u201cTaylor Swift \u2018 The Eras Tour \u2018 The End of an Era.\u201d <\/p>\n

The first two episodes of her docuseries will premiere Dec. 12.<\/p>\n

And that is not to be confused with the second, titled \u201cTaylor Swift \u2018 The Eras Tour \u2018 The Final Show,\u201d a concert film<\/a> now with the inclusion of \u201cThe Tortured Poets Department\u201d section. The 2024 album was incorporated<\/a> into her three-and-a-half-hour performance following its release. It was filmed in Vancouver.<\/p>\n

That differs from 2023\u2019s \u201cTaylor Swift: The Eras Tour\u201d film<\/a>, which was compiled from several Swift shows at SoFi Stadium<\/a> in Inglewood, a suburb of Los Angeles and arrived ahead of \u201cThe Tortured Poets Department.\u201d<\/p>\n
