{"id":213262,"date":"2025-10-14T21:32:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T21:32:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/213262\/"},"modified":"2025-10-14T21:32:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T21:32:16","slug":"imf-stays-upbeat-on-china-growth-despite-us-trade-tensions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/213262\/","title":{"rendered":"IMF stays upbeat on China growth despite US trade tensions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">China\u2019s economy will grow 4.8 per cent in 2025 before growth moderates to 4.2 per cent in 2026 according to the latest projection by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a sign of cautious optimism from the agency even as US-China ties remain volatile.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The forecast for 2025 is unchanged from IMF\u2019s July\u2019s estimate, 0.8 percentage points higher than its April projection and 0.3 percentage points higher than the report from last October.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese economy\u2019s resilient performance was driven by \u201c<a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/economic-indicators\/article\/3328745\/chinas-exports-defy-expectations-september-under-weight-trade-war-uncertainty?module=top_story&amp;pgtype=section?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">front-loading in international trade<\/a> and relatively robust domestic consumption supported by fiscal expansion in 2025\u201d, which had \u201cmore than offset the headwinds from higher uncertainty and tariffs\u201d, the IMF said in its World Economic Outlook report.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">However, the financial institution stressed the outlook \u201cremains worrisome in China, where the property sector is still on shaky footing four years after its property bubble burst\u201d. The IMF also cited risks to financial stability and weak credit demand as causes for concern.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cThe economy teeters on the edge of a debt-deflation trap,\u201d it added. \u201cManufacturing exports have buoyed growth, but it is hard to see how this could last.\u201d<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The fund suggested that \u201crebalancing toward household consumption \u2013 including through fiscal measures with a greater focus on social spending and the property sector \u2013 and scaling back industrial policies\u201d would help China reduce surpluses and alleviate domestic deflationary pressures.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">China has been affected more than other regions by tariffs, as it has faced larger duty hikes, the IMF said.
