It\u2019s important to measure how common mental illness is, so we can understand its physical, social and financial impact \u2014 and so we can show that no one is alone. These numbers are also powerful tools for raising public awareness, stigma-busting and advocating for better health care.<\/p>\n<p>Mental Health by the Numbers is based on the most current and representative sources available, according to NAMI. Data is from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and others. Infographics include statistics that NAMI believes will be most useful to a general audience. Yet people with mental illness are overrepresented in our nation\u2019s jails and prisons. We need to reduce criminal justice system involvement and increase investments in mental health care.<\/p>\n<p>CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM<\/p>\n<p>About <a href=\"https:\/\/ps.psychiatryonline.org\/doi\/full\/10.1176\/ps.2009.60.6.761\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">2 million times<\/a> each year, people with serious mental illness are booked into jails.<br \/>\nAbout 2 in 5 people who are incarcerated have a history of mental illness (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bjs.gov\/content\/pub\/pdf\/imhprpji1112.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">37%<\/a> in state and federal prisons and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bjs.gov\/content\/pub\/pdf\/imhprpji1112.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">44%<\/a> held in local jails).<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bjs.gov\/content\/pub\/pdf\/imhprpji1112.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">66%<\/a> of women in prison reported having a history of mental illness, almost twice the percentage of men in prison.<br \/>\nNearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/investigations\/police-shootings-database\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">one in four<\/a> people shot and killed by police officers between 2015 and 2020 had a mental health condition.<br \/>\nSuicide is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bjs.gov\/content\/pub\/pdf\/mlj0014_sum.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">leading cause<\/a> of death for people held in local jails.<br \/>\nAn estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/law.yale.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/pdf\/Liman\/asca_liman_2018_restrictive_housing_revised_sept_25_2018_-_embargoed_unt.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">4,000<\/a> people with serious mental illness are held in solitary confinement inside U.S. prisons.<\/p>\n<p>COMMUNITIES<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nyjn.org\/snapshot-from-njjn-2021-policy-platform-keeping-children-with-mental-health-challenges-out-of-the-youth-legal-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">70%<\/a> of youth in the juvenile justice system have a diagnosable mental health condition.<br \/>\nYouth in detention are <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18664994\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">10 times<\/a> more likely to suffer from psychosis than youth in the community.<br \/>\nAbout <a href=\"https:\/\/bjs.ojp.gov\/content\/pub\/pdf\/vpj1112.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">50,000<\/a> veterans are held in local jails \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/bjs.ojp.gov\/content\/pub\/pdf\/vpj1112.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">55%<\/a> report experiencing a mental illness.<br \/>\nAmong incarcerated people with a mental health condition, non-white individuals are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4539829\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">more likely<\/a> to go to solitary confinement, be injured, and stay longer in jail.<\/p>\n<p>ACCESS TO CARE<\/p>\n<p>About 3 in 5 people (<a href=\"https:\/\/bjs.ojp.gov\/content\/pub\/pdf\/imhprpji1112.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">63%<\/a>) with a history of mental illness do not receive mental health treatment while incarcerated in state and federal prisons.<br \/>\nLess than half of people (<a href=\"https:\/\/bjs.ojp.gov\/content\/pub\/pdf\/imhprpji1112.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">45%<\/a>) with a history of mental illness receive mental health treatment while held in local jails.<br \/>\nPeople who have healthcare coverage upon release from incarceration are <a href=\"https:\/\/files.csgjusticecenter.org\/critical-connections\/Critical-Connections-Full-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">more likely<\/a> to engage in services that reduce recidivism.<\/p>\n<p>                Mental Health &amp;
