In true Gen Z fashion, Jessie Murph first established a following on TikTok and YouTube. Inking a deal with Columbia Records in 2021, the Alabama native scored her first Top 20 hit four years later with \u201cBlue Strips.\u201d Country music fans may recognize Murph from her Jelly Roll collab \u201cWild Ones.\u201d Or, maybe from her cameo on Koe Wetzel\u2019s \u201cHigh Road.\u201d Or even from the time she walked the ACM Awards red carpet with her pet pig<\/a> on her arm.<\/p>\n

With artists like Beyonc\u00e9 and Post Malone finding crossover success in the country music arena, the genre\u2019s musical boundaries seem more porous than ever. Predictably, many fans have hurled the \u201cnot a real country artist\u201d accusation towards Murph\u2014and frankly, she won\u2019t argue with you.<\/p>\n

Jessie Murph Was Just as Shocked as You Were<\/p>\n

Rising country star Ella Langley took home a record-breaking five trophies at this year\u2019s ACM Awards. The \u201cYou Look Like You Love Me\u201d songbird beat out Kassi Ashton, Ashley Cook, Dasha, and Jessie Murph for New Female Vocalist of the Year.<\/p>\n

If you were surprised to see Murph\u2019s name on that list, you\u2019re not alone. \u201cThat was such a big surprise,\u201d the 20-year-old revealed during an appearance this week<\/a> on The Zach Sang Show. \u201cBut that event was really fun.\u00a0<\/p>\n

AL.com accurately summed up<\/a> Murph\u2019s music as \u201d\u00a0Lana Del Rey\u2019s sultry charisma and cinematic sound, young\u00a0Priscilla Presley\u2019s wigs, and a country drawl filtered through Amy Winehouse\u2019s rap-swagger.\u201d It\u2019s catchy and intriguing, but even the \u201c1965\u201d songbird wouldn\u2019t call it country.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wouldn\u2019t look at me and be like, \u2018That\u2019s a country artist,\u2019\u201d Murph said. \u201cLike, I don\u2019t know that I deserve to be in that category\u2026 I feel like there\u2019s other country artists that maybe deserve to have that spot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m Not a F\u2014ing Country Artist\u201d<\/p>\n

Jessie Murph has always shunned genre. The \u201cPray\u201d singer bluntly addressed the issue of her Nashville street cred in a 2023 TikTok video.<\/p>\n

\u201cY\u2019all have been going crazy on me about this country thing. I\u2019m not a f\u2014ing country artist, dude,\u201d Murph said. \u201cI\u2019m not a rap artist; I\u2019m not a pop artist; I\u2019m not an EDM artist\u2014I\u2019m not s\u2014, dude. Except myself, and I won\u2019t be put into a genre, ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two years later, Murph reiterated to Zach Sang that she doesn\u2019t \u201cgive a f\u2014\u201d about traditional genre markers.<\/p>\n

:\u201dI love mixing genres, and I think that I\u2019ll always do it,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t like the thought of boxing myself in to express myself\u2026 It feels like a dress code, and I don\u2019t like those.\u201d<\/p>\n
