These injuries resulted in my receiving a total hip replacement (on a perfectly healthy hip) and a plate and screws in my elbow – reader

Dear Editor,

I was very interested to read the letter from Mr. Gytenbeek last week in the Record dated September 24th regarding the safety of cyclists during the road construction on Comox hill as I was very negatively impacted by an ill-placed, unsigned speed bump on July 30th.

It was just after 1 p.m. that day when I was cycling over to Courtenay to meet some friends. The right side of the road was freshly paved in preparation for the long weekend when it would be opened up for two way traffic, so there was no road construction on the hill at all. However, traffic was still detoured to the left side of the road between orange cones that gave a space to cyclists coming up the hill. Cyclists going down the hill were instructed to “take the lane.” That was no problem for me as I’ve been cycling for many years in the valley and felt comfortable doing that. And I had an expectation that it would be safe to do so. Apart from a sign indicating bumps at the top of the hill where the road was still torn up and very bumpy, there was no further signage about speed bumps. There were cars ahead of me and behind me as I coasted happily down the hill. No one was speeding because of the narrow lane lined by orange cones.

About halfway down the hill, there was some machinery on the right where they were finishing up replanting the rhododendrons, but after that the road was clear to the bottom. As I was glancing to the right, considering cycling on that newly paved asphalt, out of the blue I hit a speed bump that had been placed in the middle of the lane. I didn’t see it in time to brace or brake, but rather flew up into the air and down onto the pavement fracturing both my elbow and my hip. These injuries resulted in my receiving a total hip replacement (on a perfectly healthy hip) and a plate and screws in my elbow.

The rest of my summer and early fall have been spent in healing and gradually becoming mobile again. My elbow may require further surgery. If there is anyone in the community who witnessed my accident, I’d be very pleased to hear from you.
